The automobile ind ustry is tru ly
‘big business' affecting people in
every type o f a c tiv ity , according
to a p re lim in a ry survey fo r last
year which has ju st been received
by the Oregon State M oto r asso­
ciation. The most im portant fac­
to r is the production o f cars and
trucks reached 4,476.000 units, an
increase o f 25 percent over 1939.
Some o f the pertinent features
o f the review are listed as fo l­
lows:
"Wholesale value o f cars and
trucks produced last year exceed­
ed three b illio n dollars:
“ U nited S t a t e s
registration
reached nearly th irty -tw o m illion
units w hile the w orld's to ta l o f
vehicles was only forty-seven m il­
lions. The U nited States has 69
percent o f a ll vehicles.
“ On farm s and in communities
under 2,400 population there are
41% o f vehicles in use w ith 59
percent being registered in la rg ­
e r areas.
"The to ta l m otor vehicle users
taxes paid last year were $1.772,-
000,000, which represents 11 per­
cent o f taxes paid from a ll sources,
federal, state and local.
"Despite w a r conditions there
were 230,500 vehicles exported
from the U nited States: these had
a value o f $280,000,000.''
In the trade field, vehicles also
were im p orta nt due to the opera­
tio n o f 41,494 dealers. 87,366 re­
p a ir shops. 6,264 wholesalers and
400,000 re ta il gasoline outlets.
