By CARL I. RYNEARSON, Manager Oregon Pacific Highway Association. The most Interesting develop ment in Washington (luring the past week. In connection with pro posed road legislation, was the of ficial release of the MarDonald- Csrmody re |» rt •'Highways for the National Defense.” This is the report for which the way was paved by thia asaociatlon last year, when through the good offices of Senators McNary, Hayden and Ixxlge, the President agreed to re quest such a report from the pub lic toads administration. In this bulletin It is impossible to give mon* than a brief outline of the above report, nor is It pos sible at thia time to secure enough copies of the report to supply all those Interested. Later, when the report is printed Instead of mimeo graphed, It may be possible to se cure additional copies. As many of you know from stories In the press during the l>ast week this report recommends in addition Io funds now available. a|iproprlatlona as follows: Access Hoads. 150 million dol lars; Tactical Roads. 25 million dollars; Strategic Network. 100 million dollars; Surveys and Plan ning. 12 million dollars. Of particular Interest to those Interested In the work of the Ore gon Pacific Highway association la the map attached to the report showing the routes approved In the strategic network by the W ar and Navy Departments. Several changes liave been made on this map, from the 1939 edition of the so-called revised Pershing map. The map attached to the report shows Oregon roads as follows: Roads of First Priority: High ways U. 8. 99. 199. 97. and 30 Ito Portland); Wolf Creek and Port land to Hebo roads; Junction City to Florence Highway; Sections of 101 in Northwest Oregon. Roads of Second Priority: On tario to Arlington (U.S. 28 and S.R. 19»; U 3 . 95 through S. E. Oregon; U S . «6. Ashland to K la math Falla; S.R 42. Roseburg to Coquille; U.S. 99W, Junction City to McMinnville; S R . 26. Albany to Newport; U.S. 30. I*ortlnnd to Astoria; U.S. 101 (Except in northwest Oregon i. Roads of Third Priority: U S. 28 and S.R. 54, Dayville to A l bany. The report, in accordance with the policy of the W ar department does not specify the above roads by their route numbers, but os near as can be determined from the map. the above roads are those specified. The map Is subject to change at any time. Of particular Interest Is the fact that while seven roads are shown connecting (he Pacific highway with coast points, only three roads are shown over the Cascades the Ashland to Klamath Falls rood, U. S. 30. and the Santiam (third priority). Road legislation should start shaping up In committee within the next two weeks, and I will Issue another bulletin as soon as important additional information Is available.
