The govenunent will probably spend millions of dollars in
setting up and enforcing the draft, but not a penny is provided
for pay for the draft board members, pens, pencils, paper and
paper pads necessary for the nation-wide draft held last Wed­
nesday. I t ’s bad enough to ask the citizens to serve without pay
on the draft hoards, but when it conn's to asking a board mem­
ber to serve free and make the draft member use his own foun­
tain pen. whether it’s cheap or expensive, is asking a lot. yet
board members who donated their services Wednesday had to
do this very thing.
Rarely a big job like the one undertaken Tuesday is done
like it ought to be. I t ’s just another proof to us that the less we
get mixed up with the government the better off we’ll be and
another proof that we don’t want anything to do with commun­
ism, nazism. fascism or any other kind of ism. even though our
present capitalistic system is rotten in spots.

A county officer told us that the same method is being used
in the tax assessor’s office and the tax collection department of
the sheriff’s office as was employed seventy-five years ago. Em­
ployes of these departments are still using the old long hand
method in writing and transferring descriptions of property. In
the meantime, electric calculating machines, adding machines,
speedy tyepwriters and other modern office equipment forms
have come into use. Fact is seventy-five years without a change
is a long time in terms of American history. Just look how far
we have advanced in other lint's in the interim.
Cost of modernizing the Lane county office is approximate­
ly $14,000 and if we are correctly informed the county will save
approximately $4,000 per year, which means the equipment will
