FIELD PEA TEST PLOT
GROWS TO 70,000 ACRE CROP
From a single tenth-acre test
plot on the Oregon State college
experimont station to an estim at
ed 1940 production of 70,000 acres,
is the 17-ycar growth of the Aust
rian winter field pen industry in
the state of Oregon.
These peas were first brought
to the state as one of scores of
new forage crops tried out under
the direction of H. A. Schoth, fed
eral agronomist In charge of for
age crop investigations in coop
eration with the Oregon experi
ment station. First used ns a for
age crop in the coast counties. It
Later found its greatest value ns a
seed crop in Oregon with n mar
ket among southern farmers, who
use It as a winter cover crop.
With Oregon production in
creased by some 30,000 acres this
year, as a result of AAA en
couragement of expansion, ad
vance preparation Is being made
for harvesting the crop through
out western Oregon and half a
dozen eastern Oregon counties
where some Is being grown.
