High School News (Francis Hughes, Editor) "People didn't used to have the scientific knowledge about health that we have today," was the statement of Dr. Henrietta Mor ris, associate professor of hygiene on the Oregon State campus, at the girls' league assembly last Friday. People had no facts about health problems in those days. They based what they knew on superstitions. Even such learned people as Charles Dickens believed in SU- pers titions. "The people of yesterday didn’t have the benefits of the knowl edge we now have.” Some of the foolish superstitions we used to have according to Dr. Morris were: Carrying horse chestnuts around with one to ward off rheumatism, believing that thun der will sour milk, and that night air is harmful to persons. "People growing up should put into practice all they know about health habits.” It was Dr. Morris’ belief that even after we know how to prevent diseases we won’t apply our knowledge. Small pox could almost entire ly be done away with if everyone would be vaccinated, but many will not. Dr. Morris continued. ‘To shut off a pain without finding the cause is like shutting off a fire alarm without finding out where the fire is.” "Everyone nowadays," conclud ed Dr. Morris, "has the opportun ity to learn about the basis of good health.” Miriam Ferrin was chairman of the program. At a French club meeting held last Friday, reports were given on French customs, manners and French cooking as a profession, by the losing members of a dues contest. Last minute preparations were made for the French and Latin clubs skating party held Friday night at Midway. Charades were played at a Latin club meeting held last Fri day. Members on the losing side of a dues contest acted out Latin sentences while the rest of the class wrote the sentences in Lat in. The most interesting charade was "The book flys,” for which "Liber volat” was the transla tion, was acted out by Harry Sturges. Lura Wilson was high scorer with four correct sen tences. Also Latin songs were sung and Latin poems were re cited. Five cars of Latin and French students, accompanied by Mr. French and Miss Crabbe, left the high school at 7 o’clock Friday evening, March 3, to go on a par ty at the Eugene skating rink. The main feature of the evening was the fall which Mr. French took while "showing off” in front of the women, but all in all every one seemed to have had a good time.
