At the request of County Club Leader Dick Kuehner, H. E. Eak- in, chamber of commerce presi dent, Tuesday designated Satur day, August 27 as the date for the Southern Lane County Fair, an nual Cottage Grove event, where 4-H club boys and girls display the results of their progress dur ing the past year. Joe Smith has been appointed chairman of the chamber of commerce committee on the lair and will name his own assistants. Last week the date of the first annual Cottage Grove Get-to gether picnic and barbeque was tentatively announced for Aug ust 20. It now appears likely, though no official announcement lias been made, that this picnic will also be held on August 27, making that date a banner one for Cottage Grove. The picnic was discussed in formally Friday evening at the merchants dinner held at the Hotel Coffee Shop. Opinion there was divided upon the best date for this affair. Some merchants felt that Saturday was a poor date, because it was difficult to close business places for even a short time on Saturdays without inconveniencing shoppers, and the merchants wished to gather with their visitors, not only for the big dinner, but also for an afternoon of sociability and entertainment.
