W iley and Ben— No n»ajer catastrophe suffered by any section o f the U nited States has caused the nation-w ide m ourn ing that has follow ed the untim ely death of W ill R ogers and W iley Post. Although the tw o were given to gadding about th e world, they al w ays seem ed close to each of us because their nam es alw ays were in the papers, because they were alw ays doing the th in g s we would ourselves like to do. because they w ere such hum an characters. They were the kind of notables w ho would have sm iled and patted on the head the street urchin who had called them by their first names. Rogers in particular had free access to the hearts of the people through his hom ely philosophy and native w it that appeared in hts daily letter in the new spapers. “All I know is w h at I read in the newspapers," w as one o f his oft- repeated w isecracks. But he knew m uch more than he ever saw in new spapers D eath often com es when least e x pected. w hen there seem s not the least reason for it. W iley had tw ice encircled the globe. R ogers had returned safely from m uch more dangerous trips than the 500-mile hop th at ended fatally. They were riding a plane that w as supposed to have everything that m odern science could provide Both had flow n in cra fts far less trustw orthy. But an engine m is fired. there w as a crash, then silence. ly. He will be pleased to learn. If he hasn't already inform ed h im self of the fact, that the city has continued all paym ents In the sam e ratio as at that tim e, except that Interest paym ents have b e e n reduced The Sen tin el said that tf pay m ents were continued In the ratio as paym ents then being m ade for principal and interest the city would be out o f debt in 10 years. That m ust have been about five years ago. P aym en ts w ill not be in the sam e proportion a s at that tim e, because m oney saved tn interest paym ents is not being used to pay principal, but in five years from now. at the present rate o f paym ent, the city's indebtedness will not be large enough to worry anyone and we ll be looking forward to the tim e we can im itate Jun ction City and hold a bonfire and jam boree Freezing and unfreezing humans— W hat a nation w e are tor freak and fan tastic th in gs w as never bet ter Illustrated th an by the offers of 200 or m ore persons w ho proclaim them selves ready to be the hum ans to prove that a C alifornian can freeze a hum an body and bring It back to life. The C alifornian, w ho has been declared a pseudo-physician amt a violator o f m edical laws, and who may uot even be a scien tist, has declared that he has frozen anim als and brought them back to life and believes that by th is m ethod such diseases as tuberculosis may be cured. O f course the cure w ill not be com plete un less th e patient recov ers. In the process a sp ecial treat m ent provides again st d isin tegra tion of the delicate brain cells. This special treatm ent would appear un necessary for those w ho volunteer to undergo th e treatm ent. Anyway, w e su ggest th a t before the process be given approval, the reviving portion o f the process be tried on som e of the big bankers. If they can be warm ed up again and their hearts started to func tioning, w e’re w illing to adm it that a great discovery has been made. R ogers and P ost would be with us no more.
