S h o u ld Know H i« “ S tu ff** “In order to lead," said HI Ho. the sage of Chinatown, “a man should be ahle not only to describe a desirable destination, hut to pro duce a map, showing that he knows the way." C liin e a e I Neatly everyone who purchases advertising thinks of his pur chase in terms of the number of inches of space for which ills dollars pay. Advertising usually is worth every cent that is paid for it, but the person who buys newspaper space gets far more than that. In the first place, advertisers make newspapers possible. Read ers could not pay the priee that newspapers would cost if there were no advertising. The fact that a community has a news paper is due to advertising patronage. No person advertising by any method would care to live in a community the size of Cot tage Grove that did not have a newspaper. He wants his adver tising in a medium that is a welcome visitor in every home into which it goes. That the newspaper is welcomed is evidenced by the fact that those who receive it pay good money to get it. So the adverister provides for his community a newspaper that is ever alert to boost the interests of his community. Every live community has a live newspaper and every community with a live newspaper is a live community. Very few factors are as important in a community as a news paper, especially if it is a newspaper that is spoken of favorably by those who receive it, by visitors who get sample copies. The more advertising a newspaper has the better newspaper it can be and the more it can do for its community. Advertisers dic tate. by the amount of their advertising, the kind of a news paper they would have- Vivitorg immediately notice it when a newspaper is poorly patronized and mark the community as one to which they are not attracted. In many communities of Oregon editors and publishers serve in civic capacities, on school boards, on city councils, as chamber of commerce officials. In any civic enterprise editors of Oregon are among the leaders. Live editors, those best able to serve their communities, those doing the most for their communities, are found in communities in which business men liberally patronize their newspaper or newspapers. Briefly, what kind of a newspaper a community, has, or whether it has one at all or not. how much a newspaper is able to do for its community, how much editors and publish ers can give to their communities, depends entirely upon adver tising patronage, and liberal advertisers should be given credit for doing much more than boosting their own business when they make it possible for a community to have a live newspaper and a live editor.
