The decisive rebuke given prohi

that there is a belief that prohibi

IN ANSWER TO A LA D Y 'S LETTER
« r it e s to say that she does not understand vhy an B -cyllnder
oar does not c o st more to run than a car with fewer cy lin d ers. She
refer s to my statem ent that our Ford V-8 develops more power on a gallon
o f gas than any oar we have made.
The use o f 8 -c y lin d e r s does not mean the addition o f two or four
extra fu el consumers. I t i s not, for example, a 4 -cy lin d er engine
m u ltip lied by two. Our 8 -c y lin d e r engine takes the fu el supply o f an
ordinary 4 -c y lin d e r engine and d iv id es i t eig h t ways. And why?
By reducing four la rg er exp losion s into eigh t sm aller ones, we get
engine smoothness and q u ietn e ss. E ig h t-cy lin d ers in d icate the wajf the
gas i s used, not the amount. I t is ju s t the d ifferen ce between going
u p sta irs in four long jumps or in e ig h t ordinary ste p s.
Two things use up gas—bad engine design and u s e le s s car weight.
B esides having an engine that g ets a high percentage o f power out o f the
fu e l, the Ford V-8 has a lig h t , strong body and c h a ssis so that no power
i s wasted in moving excess weight.
The only extravagance about the new Ford V-8 engine ia in the b u ildin g
o f i t . The extravagance i s ours— the economy i s yours.
The «hole question o f car economy needs clea rin g up. An economioal
oar g iv e s economy a l l round. P rice, operation, upkeep, a l l play th eir
p art. I f what you save on gas you lo se elsew here, that i s not economy.
As to upkeep, our d ea lers say that In recent years the improved
q u a lity o f Ford cars has cut down th e ir repair business 50 per cen t.
As to p rice with q u a lit y ,—Judge for y o u r self.
As to economy, here i s the record o f a stock car three weeks out o f
shop In Oklahoma:
On a run o f 10,054 m iles at the rate o f 1,000 m iles a day— the Ford
V-8 gave 18 .8 m iles per g allon o f gas. Not a drop of water was added
to the rad iator. The o i l was changed once in 1,000 m iles.
That should answer a lo t o f q u estion s.
