Learning of their relationship they quickly came to an amicable settle ment. Mrs. Kellens, who had been visit ing at Creswell at the home of a brother, Mteve Edwards, had ar rived in the city with Mrs. Edwards and the latter’s three children to visit Mrs, Edwards' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stevens Moving west on Main street. Mrs. Kellens, who was operating the Edwards car, was turning onto Seventh street to go to the Stevens home when the Hawley car, moving east on Mam street, rammed broadside Into the Edwards car. Four-year- old Barbara Edwards suffered a glass cut on the head that required 12 stitches, but no one else was in jured. Both cars were badly dam aged. Chief of Police Pitcher fixed the blame on the Hawley car, as the Edwards car was well within the intersection. The Edwards car, a Chevrolet, had been purchased the day before the accident. A loss of (9,000 was suffered by the Bohemia Lumber company at midnight Wednesday when a fire believed to have been of Incendiary origin destroyed a portion of the company’s docks at Veatch'a spur. Insurance on the property was re cently cancelled because the com pany Is sawed out at its present location and because of the high rate. The Cottage Grove fire depart ment responded to the call for help, but was unable to use its equipment until a pumper arrived from Eugene. The Cottage Grove department had Its hose laid when the pumper arrived after a record- breaking run made In about five minutes. Water from nearby creeks was used and all except the south west portion of the docks, where the fire started, was saved. There was not a breath of wind and a bucket brigade was able to hold the flames In check until a stream of water could be thrown. The flames were discovered by a tourist’, who reported to employes of the com pany residing nearby. The fire started In a dry pile of lumber In the extreme southwest portion of the docks. The need of a pumper to handle fires In the outlying country was emphasized by the assistance from Eugene and considerable sentiment was expressed during the fire that 1 a fire fighting district ought to be Association Is Sponsoring Two organized and a small tax levied for the purpose of purchasing equip- I Day Trip Douglas, Lane, ment. IN TOUR BY GROWERS Bull Snake Charms Big Grouse DORENA, Ore., August 12. — • Special.» — That it Is true that -nakes have the power to charm birds that they would devour Is attested by Bryson Sears. While he was operating a mowing machine recently he observed a full-grown grouse a'-wing a short distance above the ground. It had the ap pearance of hovering over some thing. At the same time it was mak ing the noise peculiar to these birds under stress of excitement. Sears got down from his machlae and Investigated, finding a large bull snake on the ground below the bird with his eyes fixed on the bird. Mr. Sears' arrival broke the spell and the big bird winged away. Sears was of the opinion that If he had not arrived the bird would have soon dropped of exhaustion and the snake would have had a fat dinner. 'Special.) — A residence fire, a service station fire and a forest fire, all In one day, was the lot of thia place last F ri day. The Joe Abeene residence with all tta contents except a sewing ma chine was destroyed about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, the Ed Brasher service station was razed between 9 and 10 o'clock in the evening and a forest fire on U ttle river south of Black Butte broke out about the same time as the Brasher fire The fire at the Abeene home is said to have started from the kitch en stove and when discovered had made so much headway that it was Impossible to save the house. Only the women were at home and they were unable to move but any thing except the machine. The loss was said to be partly covered by in surance. » The Abeene property was one of the landmarks of this neighbor hood. About 60 years ago the Watt Turpin family first settled on the place. A number of years later, when Lon Shortridge came into pos session of the place, the old house was moved back and a more sub stantial home was built and the old house was converted into a wood house Both houses and a garage were destroyed in the fir?. The cause of the Brasher service station fire was not learned, al though it was reported that an ex plosion started the blaze. The fill ing station, work shop and bam were razed but by heroic efforts the house was saved after its con tents had been moved to safety. A cow and two calves were removed from the barn but the hay was des troyed. Another landmark was wiped out in the burning of the old shed back of the London church, which was built In the horse and buggy days for the accommodation of those attending churcn. A car belonging to Tom Brasher that was housed in the shed was rtest-oyed For a time all London was threat- i n-.-d by thg blaze. The fact that there was little gas in the tanks prevented a greater catastrophe. The water system was of little use because of the low pressure. The flames were fought by means of a bucket brigade with* water from a nearby stream. There was said to be no insurance on any of the prop erty destroyed in the Brasher fire The fore*» fire w as discovered b y the local i re warden. C. C. Gilham. who was helping with the Brasher fire. Crews were taken into the district Saturday morning by C. C. Gilham and A. L. Gilham. It was reported Monday that the blaze was practically extinguished, after having covered 300 acres of under brush. Many from Cottage Grove drove out to the fire Friday night.
