Ignoring the negro boy, the mo
torist completed backing his car
Into the apace, then looked out and
angrily demanded:
"What"» the matter with you?
What do you mean, I can’t park
here?"
"Nothin’, mlatah. nothin’ at all,"
replied the lad with a frightened
look as he hastily walked away and
revealed a fire plug upon which he
had been altting and which had
been concealed from the view of

Stories about Lord Kitchener are
always cropping up.
Here la one
which seems to be new. The civic
dignitaries of a certain town want
ed to make him a presentation, and
decided the best thing they could
give him would be a piece of china.
Being aware of Kitchener'« expert
knowledge of china, the donors wer«
anxious to make sure of his ap
proval, so they put It on the table
at a lunch he attended.
It was
a fine and rare piece, and as soon
as the great roan sat down he
cocked an appraising eye upon It,
and at once decided he must se
cure It for his own collection, and
secure It cheap. So he observed In
his gruffest voice that the piece was
not genuine . . .
at which the
dignitaries, very much depressed,
took It back to the dealers! The
story Is told by Mr. Compton Mac
kenzie In “Gallipoli Memories.”

The speuding of money Is so
easy among the liberal that they
do not always reckon closely as to
Its source. For Instance, there waa
Sir Francis Walslngham who was
Queen Elizabeth’s secretary of
state.
“Few of her council," says
Hallam, "Imitated the noble disin
terestedness of Walslngham, who
spent his own estate In her service,
and left not sufficient to pay his
debts.”
Sir Francis, of course. In
the generous outpouring of his
heart and purse, had no thought
that he was not merely spending
Ids own money, but that of other
people, or that. In his enthusiasm,
he was guilty of bad faith to ills
creditors.
There are many Sir
Francises in the world, and some
times they command a good deni of
admiration and respect—until It
cornea to the settlement of their
estates.— Indianapolis News.
"V oices” e f Snakes
No «nake has a voice In the gen
erally accepted sense of that term
as applied to animals and human
beings, says an article In Pathfind
er Magazine.
Naturalists do not
credit the reports of snakes that
bleat like a deer, purr like a eat,
cough like a monkey, or make other
vocal sounds. 8ome species of
snakes, such as the boa constrictors,
pythons and th» little American
puffing adders, are able to make a
hissing noise, which Is produced by
the a ir rushing from the throat
when the lungs are deflated. This,
according to the Smithsonian Insti
tution, Is the only “voice” possessed
by snakes. Rattlesnakes make the
rattling noises by vibrating th t tip»
their tails.
