Automobile tourists through the
northern part of California are
liable to have their attention at

These piles are the accumulation

erators and left In ruin, for the
land la useless for any purpose
whatever after the passage of the
dredger.
These machines cost
about a quarter of a million dol
lars, but the cost of operation is
very small. A large quantity of
the earth must be treated to recov
er a small quantity of the yellow
metal, but at that the business Is
very profltable. The stones taken
from the soil are useful only to
grind up for cement, but the piles
standing today will offer crushed
stone sufficient for the demands of
the entire country for many years.

being one of the best college band»
on the Pacific coast and which will
appear here in concert Friday
night. March 21, at the high school,
has played at every world fa ir on
the Pacific coast since 1900.

has directed the band since 1905,
with the exception of last year
when be was on sabbatical leave In
the east. Under his leadership the
band has grown stronger year by-
year until it is now a self-support
ing organization.
In addition to tts appearance at
fairs and expositions the band has
always taken an annual concert
tour during spring vacations. The
band also appears at the O. S. C.
team's major football games and
has won the name of being a well
drilled and trained organization.

Portland arrived in the city this
afternoon to meet women of the
city and interest them in the can
didacy of Senator Charles H all for
governor. Mrs. Thompson, who Is
a political speaker of prominence,
was a member of several sessions
of the Oregon legislature.
