Humor Ancient and Modern
Many of the glib expressions of
the most demure modem women
would have caused the Mrs. Grun
dy s of an
earlier day
to
gasp In horror. For example. If a
girl In Elizabethan times bad said
"confound" something she would
have been regarded ns a rowdy bag
gage and would have been shunned
by polite society, tiecause the word
"confound" originally was a male
diction. Also, If she had remarked
that she wus fond of somebody, she
would have caused a titter, because
"fond" used to meuu "foolish."
Dry humor becomes an Impossi
ble expression w hen It Is considered
that the original tn.-anlng of bwmor
was to designate a moisture that
In old limes was believed to be one
of the four elements of the human
constitution.—Detroit News.
