Black Phosphorus
Black phosphorus, hitherto sup
posed to he pure phosphorus turned
black ns a result of sudden «Muling,
is produced by the contact of phos
phorus with mercury on which it
can react at the moment when it
laisses from the liquid to the solid
-tate.
Molten phosphorus dis
solves mercury, giving a colorless
solution.
When cooled the satu
rated solution remains colorless in
all low temperatures, but if the
phosphorus solidities the solidifica
tion is very weak and the mercury
leaves the s«diditied phosphorus and
colors it black.
If black phosphorus is melted.
:he mercury is easily redissolved in
the surrounding phosphorus ami
the whole bo«|y becomes colorless.
This is the correct explanation of
the phenomenon.
