CENSURING NEWSPAPERS.
Newspapers iu the uni varsity city
and a reporter in the ag college
city are being censured for pub
lication of news that reflect» upon
th«? characters of the schools of
their cities.
The news of the rebellion of
high school students at Eugene
has gone over the entire ! country,
and as a result there 1 has been
some reflection upon the school«,
but more upon the students who
brought about the condition.
In Eugene, it is understood, the
attempt to muzzle the newspapers
went so far that advertisers were
asked to threaten to withdraw
their patronage unless the news
was suppressed.
In Corvallis a college • K'fl dis-
obeyed her instructor and
i
was
mildly pun ¡she« I for so doing, The
reporter on the campus who sent
the news to a Portland newspaper
was set upon by a committee of
students and beaten.
The result has been that
the
news of the beating given
the
reporter has gone out and it, liriH
been necessary to repeat the fi rut
story in order to explain the Hee-
ond one.
The first, story
him,
therefore, become more important
than before and has been read by
thousands who paid little attention
to its first publication.
The fact that, Eugene newspapers
were threatem'd was also
given
publicity, so that in both i cases
the attempt, to censure the • news
papers only resulted
in greater
i
publicity.
Wo presume that there are cases
in which news is suppressed by
prcMBuru brought to bear, but as a
whole newspapers are rather four-
less in publication of legitimate
news and the time
has
passed
when a real newspaper fears threats
of withdrawal of advertising pa
tronage.
Advertising is used be
cause, of the business it li rings to
the purchaser of space and
he
wants his advertising in the news-
papers that are read,
Readers
want all the news, and especially
news of the kind which it was
desired to suppress nt Eugeno and
< ’orvallis.
There is also another side
to
»Suppression of
the story.
the

high school students would have
only resulted in making tin* stu-
dents i feel that they were immune
and entitled
i
to special favors,
They would have been encouraged
to continue
<
their rebellion and to
stir up further strife. The publi
city given by Eugeno newspapers
has don«1 more to clarify the situa-
tion in Eugene than all the acts
of parents, school teachers
and
school board members.
Even ra
bellious students do not court the
kind of publicity the Eugene stu-
dents have been getting, nnd if
the situation ip Eugene becomes
satisfactory it nd remains satisfar-
