Is regarded as a variety of corun
dum, highly transparent and bril
liant. It Is sometimes colorless, or
nearly so. It more frequently, how
ever, exhibits color, generally a
bright red (1. e„ the ruby) or a
beautiful blue—the latter being
that commonly called sapphire.
Purplish or greenish color Indicates
a flaw, and usual defects are clouds,
milk spots, flakes or stripes. A sap
phire largely used among Jewelers
Is called a “reconstructed sapphire,”
artificially made of hard glass
(crystal) In Fram e and Germany,
and Is of no value except for the
work entailed In cutting and mount
ing in Jewelry. The true sapphire
is found crystallized, usually In six-
sided prisms, terminated by six-
sided pyramids. It is sometimes
found Imbedded in gneiss, but most
frequently occurs In alluvial soils.
It occurs In Bohemia and Saxony,
but the finest are found In Ceylon.
Kashmir and Burma also produce
fine specimens, and sapphires are
found In Australia and parts of the
United States. The value depends
on quality more than on size and
does not decrease with the size of
the gem.
Oriental Carpet Makers
Chant While They Work
The Oriental cannot work in con
cert unless he cliunts In concert, too.
And he has a wonderful eur for his
own uproar. Here, for Instance, on
the floor were two men bending
over the same pattern-carpet. One
was dictating to a gung on one side,
the other on the other; they were
at different places, and as each
bawled out a direction to his men
the others were reveling In their
“So let It' be done.” Yet there was
not a mistake in either, though the
carpets were only Just beginning;
each gang must have caught every
’ord. At the big 57-foot carpet, of
course, the directions are hardly
needed; ft has been a-making for
many months, until the lender reels
off the colors and numbers by heart,
and the dozen workers, each op
posite his strip of pattern, pnt In
the stitches like automata.
All the convict carpet workers
are picked men; It Is not every
malefactor that has the brain Co
take in the directions, the eye to
distinguish flie colors, or the hand
to put them In. Such as have prize

Gentlemen
Perhaps these are rarer person-
ages than some of us think for.
Which of us can point out many
such In this circle—men whose
alms are generous, whose troth Is
constnnt, and not only constant In
Its kind but elevated in Its degree;
whose want' of meanness makes
them simple; who can look the
world honestly In the face with an
equal manly sympathy for the great
and the small? We all know n hun
dred whose coats are very well
made, nnd a score who have excel
lent manners, nnd one or two happy
beings who are in what they call
the inner circles, and have shot
into the very center and bull’s-eye
of the fashion; but of gentlemen
how many? Let us take a little
scrap of paper and each make out
,
his list.—Thackeray.
Bird’s-Eye Maple
Bird’s-eye tnnple is a popular
name for hard, rock or sugar tnnple.
It Is called bird's-eye maple because
frequently the grain of the wood
exhibits a spotted appearance, sup
posedly resembling birds’ eyes. Such
wood Is widely used for veneer and
finishing purposes. Sometimes, In
stead of being spotted, the grain of
the wood appears wavy. Both of
these varieties of wood found In the
rock maple are accidental forms In
the arrangement of the wood fiber.
