* SYNTHETIC SUN TO
MAKE BABES STURDY
Light, Strong in Violet Ray«,
Spun Growth.
Orono, Me.—Artificial sunlight, pow
erful in ultraviolet or health-giving
rays rather titan in light or heat in
tensity, obtained by use of a fused
quurts mercury vapor arc lamp, has
been used with startling results on
young chickens at the University of
Maine.
The tests prove that rickets in chil
dren is caused largely by the absence
of direct sunlight, and the rays are ex
pected to do much in combating this
disease. The findings are also to show
results in an educational way by teach
ing the value of outdoor life, particu
larly in rearing children. They may
k also reveal factors influencing the
growth of children.
Experiments, conducted by Dr. C. O.
Little, president of the university, and
Dr. W. T. Bovle, professor of bio
physics at the Harvard Medical school,
in co-operation with the General Elec
tric company on a brood of pedigreed
chicks, raveal that not only larger and
stronger chicks can be raised under
the artificial sunlight, but that chicks
raised under natural sunlight, filtered
through ordinary window glass, de
veloped ‘veak legs and rickets, weighed
but one-fifth as much as the others,
and died unless a change in living cm»-
dltlons was made.
Ordinary window glass Is opaque to
ultraviolet rays and it was the ab
sence of the actinic or health giving
rays which resulted in the marked un
der-development of the chicks.
Babies of poor families brought up
In dark alleys and crowded tenements
and rich children brought up in homes
where windows are closed and all sun
light is filtered through glass develop
rickets, and according to Doctor Bovle,
jthls is one of the chief causes of bow
legs, which most mothers believe re
sult from allowing the child to stand
on its feet or walk too early in life.
“Autopsies on babies in Dresden
showed that of those which were born
In the fall and died in the spring, 96
per cent had rickets," Doctor Bovle
said. “However, of those born in the
spring and who died in the fall only a
small percentage had ricket«. The
babies born in the spring were out
doors In the sunlight during the sum I
mer and therefore were not deprived
of the ultraviolet rays In the sun.
"The Importance of these recent em-
perlmen rs with chickens would be very
great If they were only applicable to
the raising of chickens. They are
quite as applicable to the production
of eggs and, more Important still, they
are applicable to the rearing of our
own children, for rickets is a disease
of calcium metabolism and can be.
cured by proper exposure to the ultra
violet light."

Stockholm—An Interesting Lnveu
tlon for the accurate indicating at the
speed at ships, and the recording of
the distance sailed, ha» been perfected
IB Sweden, and the functioning of the
instrument was demonstrated recently
before a meeting of the Swedish Ship
owners’ association.
The new log operates with a mar
gin of error of less than 1 per cent,
compared with an error of aa much
as 10 per cent la the cane of aome
other logs ordinarily need by merchant

It la based on the principle that the
pressure of water from the direction
