ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD GERALD !
CONNER SCARES RATTLER
BY STEPPING NEAR IT
♦
Gerald Conner, Il-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Conner, nearly
scared to death a big rattler Mon
day when he stepped within a few
inches of it on a trail near the
Conner place in Delight Valley. The
lad was as badly frightened as .the
snake, however, and went right
away from there. Gerald’s uncle,
R. G. (Bose) Conner, followed the
reptile and decapitated it with a
well-directed rifle bullet. It hud ten
rattles and a button.

many startling things but the record
probably is held by a Cottage Grove
member of the feminine sex who
prevented two meetings of the city
council last week. This embryo po
litical leader and arbiter of the
destinies of the nation has “shin
gled* * hair and has never permitted
her activities to be interfered with
by stockings to bind the knees or
anything resembling a corset to
interfere with full operation of her
vocal machinery.
In appearance she is not as for
midable as the facts related might
lead those unacquainted with her
to believe. She has the sweetest of
smiles and twinkling blue eyes. She
has never made an enemy.
Nor is she an amazon in appear
ance. She weighs four pounds and
a few’ ounces and has been demon
strating her interest in things po
litical for slightly over two weeks.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Elbert Bede. That she prevented
two meetings of the city council
came about in this way:
Her father is a member of that
sometimes august body. During last
week Aidermen Roy Short was away
on a vacation and Alderman Axil
Swanson was in Portland on busi
ness. That left exactly a quorum
of the membership at home, but
when the roll was Called for the
meeting Monday night it was found
that the editorial alderman had left
word with the recorder that he hud
received instructions from the new
member of his family that he must
pay her a social visit every evening
until her dismissal from the hos
pital. He was already out of the
city on the way to tho hospital and
the council adjourned to Wednesday
night. Bede was notified that lie
must be present in order that im
portant business could be transact
ed. He did not hesitate in making
a decision. He told the council
that he wasn’t going to take any
chances on arousing the ire of any
feminine member of his family—
thereby showing that he had discre
tion which should make him a good
councilman—and that the council,
the city and everything and every
one else could go to the place where
anyone foolish enough to serve on a
council ought to go. Again the
meeting had to be adjourned.
The meeting was finally held
Monday night, Aiderman Swanson
being homo to make a quorum.
