a party to an expensive and long
drawn out law suit. 1 have there
fore adopted a far more certain aud
u far less expensive course of aetion.'
I am proceeding upon the theory
that the almost riotous turbulence
of the heated discussions at the
recent taxpayers’ meeting last Wed
nesday "does not mark the health '
ful pulse” of the taxpayers of Lane
county. Not in an assembly of that
kind—not by the bearded statesmen:
on the curb of Willamette street—i
is the best and highest interests of
the Lane county taxpayers to be de
termined, but by the firesides in the
homes of the voters, where the i
thoughtful voters of both sexes, j
with their childreu about them, with
calm thoughts inspired by the love
of God and home and country, with
the history of the past, the hopes of
the future, and a knowledge of the'
great and good men who have'
adorned and blessed our nation in
days gone by—it is there that al
mighty God prepares tho verdict
that shall determine the wisdom of
this recall movement. Not in Eu
gene, not in a riotous assembly in
the courthouse, but in tho sober
quiet that will come to the men and
women of Lane county between now
and the coming primary election;
in the solemn silence of deliberate
judgment will the great common
Father of us all settle the question
of the righteousness of this recall
movement.
I have an abiding faith that the
fathers and mothers of Lune county
who are trying to teach their chil
dren that virtue is better than vice,
that truth is better than falsehood,
that sobriety is better than intem
perance, that death is infinitely
preferable to dishonor, and who are
trying to inspire the souls of their
children with a love of the sanc
tity of home, a patriotic lovo of
country and an unshaken faith in
the eternal God, will rally to my
support in this movement tc recall
tho above named county commis
sioners.
I am a poor old man 78 years of
age and not financially able to un
dertake so great a task. I am often
in sore need of a few dollars, yet
there is not money enough in all the
wide, wide world to cause me to
swerve a singlo hair’s breadth from
my purpose, and if it shall trans
pire that, under God, I have been
partly instrumental in righting a
monstrous wrong, I shall be content
to break a meager crust tho re
mainder of my declining years. In
the prosecution of this recall I shall
be as uncompromising as truth, as
relentless as fate. Every step which
I shall take in this matter will be
an humble step with the fear of
God constantly in rpy heart, and re
membering always—especially under
the most provoking circumstances—
that, ‘‘Vengeance is mine. I will
repay, saith the Lord.” (Romans
12:19.) COL. W. G. D. MERCER.
