NUMBER 19 ORGANIZATION OF COMMERCIAL CLUB OP TONIGHT City Never Before Better Able to Support Such a Body Nor More in Need of It. A meeting for the organization of a commercial club will be held tonight in Phillips hall, All those interested in the forming of such an organisation and ready to give it support have been invited to attend. A preliminary meeting of a num ber of business men was held Mon day night at Hotel Bartell. Kiwanis and Rotary club organizations were discussed, but it was decided that theso could not come until after a live commercial organization should be established. Cottage Grove for years had a commercial club which was fitfully more or less active and upon the whole accomplished much good for the city. In a moment of enthu siasm and under the spell of the American City bureau, it was com pletely reorganized under the name of the chamber of commerce, with a large membership and a good- sized promotion fund« Through no fault of its officers, but largely because of the fact that the Amer ican City people took too large a chunk of the receipts, the chamber of commerce lingeringly succumbed to a lack of sustenance and for two years tho city has been with out a commercial organization. Tho old commercial club was of ten in danger of going under but it always pulled through and was in u flourishing condition when it succumbed to the urge to get into high society. After living upon the fat of the land for a few months, it was no longer able to withstand the pangs of hunger as it so often had done before. Incidentally the American City people were able to collect but a small part of the amount due for their services. Those behind the move to revive the commercial club feel that the city never was better able to sup port a commercial organization and never was more in need of one. The annual scholarship loan day of the Oregon Federation of Wom ens’ clubs will be held Wednesday, January 24. The work here will be in charge of the* Tuesday Eve ning Bt.udv club. The ¡»resent total of the fund thiu may be loaned is $17,000 and so much of this is now out in loans that, a large addition is necessary if all those needing assistance from the fund are to be accommodated. The policy of tho board having charge of the fund is to make loans of $150 each to girls in their junior and senior years, to be repaid after graduation. Loans have been made to 361 girls since tho establishment of the fund. Fifty girls have made applications for loans this year. All incidental expenses in connection with administering the fund are paid by the federation of women’s clubs, ho that the whole amount of the fund is available for loan purposes. Sheriff Fred Stickels announced while in this city a few days ago that he would not be a caiidi- dato for reelection. When Stickels was first elected five yours ago ho defeated (1. B. Pitcher, of this city. He offered Pitchor a deputy ship in his office, but Pitcher pre ferred to remain on the job here as city marshal and deputy sheriff. Now that Stickels is not to bo a candidate for reelection, a number of Pitcher’s friends are suggesting that this may be the psychological moment for him to go after the job. He has become well known throughout the county as a pres ciont officer and a man getter. LOUCKS APPOINTED AGENT FOR INDIREX CAR LIGHT J. E.
