Mass aud there is little joy to be found. 31 Twelfth Nt., Cottage Grove. d22p|And the peculiar feature of the ait- nation is that them is really no good reason for the crepe which all seem to delight in hanging. There has been n good wheat crop, grown at lower prices than former crops; in southern Minnesota and iu Iowa there hns been a mar velous corn crop, sold at record prices; farmers have gone into dairying oil an extensive scale and are doing extremely well; there has been plenty of work for everyone; collections are good and savings bank deposits are steadily growing; but still the people will not buy. No one knows exactly why but, in view of conditions as stated, it seems a foregone conclusion that the trouble is psychological and not economic. A typical case was related to me ignore whnt their bank books sny. Politically there is chaos; in fact, there is no political situation. Mag nus Johnson and Nhipstead and oth er socialists are in control of the republican party. Governor Preus, a former republican leader, is entirely discreditel because of his over whelming defeat by Magnus John son. There ia no democratic party. The former labor party, or uon-por- tn.au league, or socialist party—call it what you will; it calls itself the republican pnrty, but isn’t—is in the saddle. It controlled the house of representatives at the last session of the legislature, but was blocked by a alight majority of conservative senators and Governor Preus, a con servative governor. What the result of the next election will be, no one knows. Senator Magnus Johnson is expected to run for governor and will beat Governor Preus hands down, so the political dopesters aver. It is expected that the farm er labor-socialist-non-partisan league clique will control the republican party and elect enough of its mem bers to control the legislature, both senate and house. Conditions and sentiment are just the reverse from those in Winnipeg. There conditions are really discour aging, but the fanners and business men. with British grit, are plugging away, determined to carry on. and they are whistling while they are doing it. In Minnesota, conditions are as reasoaably good as any fair minded person eould ask. but the farmers and business men—the fanners in particular—are in a blue funk. There ia. however, some excuse for the jobbers and bankers who have dealings with North Dakota. I I because that »fate is truly in a deo- j by a country banker whom I met nt one of the large St. Paul bunks. He lives in a southern Minnesota town of about 500 inhabitants. The town has bank deposits of over a million, a creamery which disburses $200,000 annually, the country surrounding it has bad a good wheat crop and a wonderful corn crop at big prices, the farmers aro all out of debt—but still they won’t buy. So-called fi nancial wiseacres explain this condi tion by blaming newspaper propa ganda and the political situation. They say so much has been said about the deplorable condition of the farmer that the farmers them selves have begun to believe ia the hopelessness of their own state. They believe the newspapers and A Fifty-two Week. Christmas Gift ZwYANY of your friends would appreciate nothing W.1J» more than a gift of The Sentinel aa a Christmas pieaent. The Cottage Grove Sentinel perate plight. There has been an other crop failure, which is the fourth or fifth running, and taking its political troubles into considera tion and all it has suffered in this regard, the state is undoubtedly the darkest spot in the United States. The state bank is broke; no one is getting anything out of the state guaranty of bank deposist, because there is nothing to get; the state rural credits and city home building loan funds are bankrupt, the state- owned mill is being leased out on some sort of basis which is bringing in hardly anything to the state; and about everything that could happen has happened. It will take North Dakota a generation to re cover from what has been heaped upon it by the hand of Providence and by the non-partisan league.
