“UH-FOOT
I am still wondering why it is that
he did not also put over his sig

ing statements which he has made
to several witnesses who stand
ready to testify to what he said.
He has positively said that we have
nothing at Half Moon bay. We are
woniiering why he did not also in
clude this statement in this article
and be man enough to also sign it

the Woolards also said to reliable
witnesses that even if we struck
oil in Cottage Grove it would prove
nothing. It really makes one feel
that it is useless to waste any words
WRIGLEYS

on answering such unreasonable
knockers.
It will also bo noticed that Mr.
Woodard goes to a lot of trouble
securing articles from men like R.
E. Colloni, from California, in which
he attempts to poke fun at “divin
ing rods” and “doodlebugs.” This
surely is funny because the Guar
auty Oil company, of Oregon, and
Olson Brothers have never used any
of these nor do they depend on
them in nny way whatsoever. Our
methods for locating oil are on a
scientific basis and can in no way
be classed or confused with the su
perstitions of the past.
It should also be noticed that Mr.
Woodard tries to make out that I
have lied about who found Signal
Hill. I have never said that I dis
covered Signal Hill. I have said
that our methods for locating oil
in the hands of W. A. Sage mid his
experts discovered Signal Hill and
pronounced it an oil field before
there was an oil derrick anywhere
there in sight. If Mr. Woodnrd
wants a real lively time let him
deny over his signature that W. A.
Sage did as here stated and maybe
he will find out that he is not deal
ing with a preacher who, in the
very nature of things, must be more
patient, kind and forbearing thun
Mr. Huge might find it necessary
to be.
In regard to Petaluma it might be
well for Mr. Woodard to know that
W. A. Sage has the signed reports
from a number of prominent geolo
gists who positively declare that
that field is a very promising and
future coming oil field with great
possibilities for good oil and gas
producers of a very high gravity oil.
I am glad that Rev. W. A. Elkins
and D. T. Awbrey, men of the
highest character and unquestioned
sincerity, of their own accord went
to California to find out the truth
or falsehood about the situation as
stated by the knockers. Their re
port in full will be found elsewhere
in this issue and speaks for itself.
When men become prejudiced they
are not capable of either seeing or
stating '.hiugs as they are. Judge
ye therefore whom to believe, a
prejudiced knocker, or the report of
honest non who have no selfish in
terests to seek, but only to give
the truth as they find it after most
careful examination.
History will prove that many of
tho great oil fields of the world
were many years in developing into
paying production. Mr. Woodard
has lived in Oregon for many years
and so far has nothing to show in
visible construction for the devel
opment or opening of an oil field
here.
We have and are willing
to leave it to the good judgment of
honest people. Who, he or the peo
ple interested in oil development,
are trying the hardest and have
done the most to develop these re
sources for the good of tho com
munity. They who dwell in glass
houses should be more careful not
to throw such large stones. They
might be seriously cut with flying
glass. In the way of drilling and
opening up oil fields, we have not
been working in any field more
than eighteen months, which cannot
be considered too long a time for
developing and bringing into pro
duction such largo projects. Never
theless, even in this short time one
well has been brought into produc
tion which produced over two hun
dred burrels of fifty-six gravity oil
until the casing was caved in by
dangerous gas pressure. Another (in
Texas) has just come in so big
that wo have not as yet gotten her
under control. Several others are
down as deep ns forty-three hundred
feet, nearing production with every
promise that they, as well as all
others when finished, will come in
large and paying producers.
We seriously doubt that Mr.
Woodard can find any oil field
which has been discovered, sur
veyed,
secured, developed and
brought into production in auy
shorter time and with more to show
in its development than what we
have really accomplished iu any
and all of the fields in which we
have been operating. We feel abso
lutely safe to say that we will open
and develop a great oil field in
Oregon faster than anyone who has
so for been operating in this state.
In less than seven months since
we began actual development work
in this state, we have found,
checked, surveyed, scientifically se
lected and secured over 50,000 acres
of oil land; have erected two large
standard derricks at Eugene and
Cottage Grove; have installed ma
chinery and equipment in and at
these derricks worth about *80,000;
have drilled the Eugene well down
to a depth of over 800 feet; have
let a contract for another oil well
to be drilled at Alpine near Corval
lie; have helped to revive the drill
ing operations at Medford; have
kept up and continued all of the
drilling operations in California,
Texas and Wyoming in which we
have large interests; have checked
and surveyed for future and fur
ther development over 100,000 acres
of valuable oil land in the state of
Oregon where we know thousands
of oil wells can be drilled in whieh
oil or gas (n paying quantities can
be found, when drilled to their pos
sible and necessary depths; have so
far succeeded in paying all bills for
which we were responsible in all of
these developments at the time
when said bills were properly ren
dered and justly due.
All of the above we have aecom
plished in just these few months
and so far we have collected only
*31,500 from Cottage Grove and Eu
gene. We have therefore put into
the«- developments for the good of
these two cities a great deal more
than has actually been paid oot by
tlem fo' their own good.
It has always been true that
those who have accomplished the
most for the good of the largest
number have had to do so ia the
face of all kinds of opposition from
those who are enemies to progrMi
as well an those who profess to be
its friends. John Woodard has not
one dollar invented in these devel
opments. He must have some pe
culiar ulterior motive or dull axe
to grind.
We fully believe that the good

constructive and sensible people of
the state and of the community
are proud of the fact that they
have the opportunity to do some
thing really worth while for the de
velopment of the great and natural
resources that are here for the good
of all when brought to the surface.
There must be something radically
wrong with any man who would
stoop to anything that would in any
way have the tendency to hinder or
delay such needed developments.
If there are large quantities of
oil, gas, coal or minerals in this
beautiful state it surely is time that
someone comes into the state, even
if in the face of the worst opposi
tion, such developments to make.
Someone must do it or it will never
be done. Should not the property
owners and all interested iu the
welfare and development of this
community and state be willing to
have some worthy part in such
good without you making any in
vestment in what is for your inter
est. If you have not the money or
the means, you can at least lend

inging a worthy enterprise your

DAVID EUGENE OLSON.
Sanded Oil Wells.
Being interested in oil wells gen
erally, a representative of The Sen-1
tiuel recently held an interesting
conversation with J. J. Woodruff,
head driller for the well here.
Among other things, Mr. Woodruff
stated that nine out of every ten
wells drilled in the west become
sanded and that often it is one, two
or three months before all the sand
can be removed, the oil lino extend
ed to the oil and the well brought
into fu|l production. He anticipates
that such is likely to be the case
with the Cottage Grove well.
Mr. Woodruff was not acquainted
with Sage 4 Olson Brothers before
coming here to enter their employ
and has never been in the Half
Moon bay district. He has never
teen a well, so far as he knows,
that was located with oil-finding
instruments but believes it quito
possible that there could be such
instruments. He has never seen the
instruments used by Sage & Olson
Brothers.
