COTTAGE GROVE SENTINE!«, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1923 PAGE SIX * Oil Development in the United States The Atlantic state«—Pennsylvania in particular—first produced coal oil in commercial quantities. New York, Ohio and Indiana also contributed, followed later by Kentucky and West Virginia, and up to the year 1901 almost the entire production of the United States came from these states. Then the industry leaped over into Kansas, Texas and California, each of which came into prominence as oil producers. Intervening states later joined tke list. A strange experience met with in each new field opened up was the adverse opinion of those supposed to be conversant on the subject. Almost invariably the efforts were discouraged at first, California, now one of the foremost oil producing states in the union, being a good example of this attitude, until perseverance dis-, proved their propheciea. Today half or over of the states of the union arc oil producers and still the movement grows. Oil produced in the southern states and tropical cli mates is mostly of a low grade, being of a thick, gummy- like substance and low gravity, while the yield of the higher grade oil with a paraffin base comes mostly from eastern states. More recently northern states contribut ing show the same high grade. Recently oil taken from the Sage-Olson wells at Half moon Bay shows a gravity of 56 degrees, which is far above that produced in the south. The rapid evaporation of all samples secured thus far from the Eugene well are most encouraging, clearly indicating the high grade of oil we may expect from this region and which has been estimated by those securing the samples to test in the neighborhood of 75% gasoline, 11% ether and about 7% turpentine. To say the least it has “some kick’’ as a motor power and needs but little refining to become a c,ommercial article. As a further check on the purity of northern oil, nu merous travelers returning from Alaska and the northern regions report almost pure gasoline exuding from crev ices in the rocks there in many places. Investors in Oregon oil securities have nothing to fear from competition with the low grade produced in the south, of which more will be said next week. Iiate re ports bring the news that hot mud has been encoun tered in the Eugene well, which is, one more strong indi cation of abundance of oil and possibly gas when the proper depth has been reached, ('all and see a sample of same at Durham’s. Not satisfied with this, we put the Star up the aide of Grouse mountain to the old Knott Khafts, down Grouse to the saddle and around Fairview to the Fairview-Bohemia saddle, No other ear has ever attempted this test the most, severe test ever given a car in this section, We then dropped down to the Evening Star, then returned to the Fair view-Bohemia saddle and returned by Sharp's ereek. The ear demonstrated its mechanical perfetion and its wondrful pulling power by never hesitating at any obstacle. Its perfect cooling sysleui aud its fuel economy were demount rated by the fact that we did not boil the water on iu»y of the murderous grades over which it was put NO WATER. OH.
