(Srnur Bimtûwl VOLUME XXXIII COTTAGE GROVE, LANE COUNTY, OREGON, FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1923 MR. AND MBS. TOMPKINS HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR OVER HALF A CENTURY 4-------------------------- 4 Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Tompkins aro another Cottage Grove couple who have been wed for much more than half a century. Both were born in Monroe county, N. Y., where they were married October 6, 1867, which is nearly 56 years ago. They came to Cottage Grove in 1896 and havo lived hero ever since. They agree with statements made by other couples who have been quoted by The Sentinel to the effect thut there is no better place than Cottage Grove in which to livo happily. They have one son, C. R. Tomp kins, who lives on the Lorane.route. Mr. Tompkins served in tho Civil war as a member of the 105th New York volunteers and was wounded at Fredericksburg. Both Mr. and Mrs. Tompkins have been prominent in the affairs of the G. A. R. and W. R. C. NUMBER 50 ♦------------------ —--------------------- 4 4--------------------------------------------- 4 4---------------------------------------------♦ ♦--------------------------------------------- 4 BILL THUM IS PLAYING LUCKY STREAK TO LIMIT; FINDS HIS TROUT PARKED CALIFORNIANS PROBABLY IN BAD FOR ADMISSION OF OREGON ’8 SUPERIORITY Bill Thum, sometimes formally called William, and often called much worse things by those whom he offended during his recent stren uous campaign for mayor of tho city, which campaign did not offi cially open until the day after election, is lucky in everything ex cept politics. It will be remembered that sev- oral weeks ago he lost a $20 bill and that when he located it the bill had picked up a playmate of like denomination. His lucky streak uguin appeared Bunday while he was a member of a picnic party at Lundpark made up of employes of the Knowles && Graber store, in which Bill is prominent nonstockholder and a more or less efficient clerk. While he wus whipping Champion creek (named after Bill) in search of u few largo samples of the fes tive finuy denizens of that stream, he espied whut seemed to be a gun reposing peacefully upon the bed of the stream in four feet, six and fifteen-sixteenths inches of water. Bill is a fine retriever. He had no difficulty in bringing the gun to the surface but he was surprised when he found an even half dozen pretty rainbow trout hitched to tho gun with* a fine grade of tackle. Bill believes that some tender hearted fisherman caught tho trout, did not have the nerve to kill them with his own hands, hitched them to the gun nnd intended to kill them by exploding the gun under water, thut unknown to the man who dropped the gun into the water it failed to explode, but that he thought it had exploded and shrank from fishing the gun out of tho water and witnessing how ho hud brought death to six innocent little fish. When tho gun was cleaned up the next day it was found to be one which Bill hud rented out and which hud never been returned. The name of tho man who rented tho gun had not been kept. A. L.
