OREGON'S PAVED ROADS |
ARE BEING BOOSTED IN [
| PAPERS OVER COUNTRY
♦----------------------------------------------- ♦
A story by C. B. Forbes, describ
ing Oregon roads and published in
Forbes Magazine, has been quoted
iu numerous papers of the country.
The following cuipping is taken
from The Express, Enfield, Ill.:
In five years Oregon has spent
$57,060,060 iu road building. How’s
that for a population of only 800,-
060! No other state in the union
probably comes anywhere near such
a per capita expenditure for good
roads. Other Pacific states also are
energetically constructing the very
finest paved righways. Oregon’s
roads have cost $30,000 a mile, ex-
elusive of bridges. The resuit is
that you can now drive hundreds
of miles north and south on roads
the equal of any that New York,
Chicago or any other large city can
boast. Also it will very shortly be
possible to motor clear through the
state of Oregou to the Idaho border
line, a distance equal to the total
length of England.
1 noticed, too, a great many sub
stantial roads in many parts of the
western half of the country. Goqd
roads always go hand ill hand with
a high state of civilization. If the
Romans needed good roads in their
day, how mueh more does this far-
flung continent need them today!
Next to necessary expenditures for
up to date sanitation no district
can invest a generous aincunt of
money more wisely than in con
structing first-class roads, now so
necessary for the expeditious trans
portation of products and so con
ducive to the development of de
sirable social intercourse, without
which we can never hope to have
our agricultural resources adequate
ly developed.
Yes, the west is on the right
track.

tho evening prelude and their en
tertainment was in keeping with the
high elass of the programs of the
entire session.
Dr. Henry Gaines Hawn, dramatic
and oral English instructor of na
tional reputation, gave the Friday
evening lecture. His subject was
“The Soul of things,” iu which he
espoused a new philosophy applied
to social, business aud civic life
und interspersed his lecture with
interpretations of u number of pop
ular readings. The point he made
was that we do not get the most
out of living, that we pay too dear
ly for pleasures which do not sa tis-
fy, that we take no notice of
_ thou
sands of things about us that should
help to make us happy, that we
give too much time to a few things
mid not enough time to many
things. He was unquestionably the
most finished speaker who appeared
before the chuutauqua here.
Norman V. l’earce gave the Sat
urday afternoon program, a unique
travel lecture on Australia with an
exhibition of curios from the
world’s curiosity shop, Australia,
where birds have beautiful plumage
but no song, where flowers are won.
ilftrful but huvo no scent, where
herds of wild buffalos and wild
horses roam the prairies, the home
of the kangaroo, the wullaby, the
wombat, the laughing juekass and
the lyre bird.
The Garner jubilee singers gave
the Saturday evening program, the
closing one of the session. They
featured topical numbers, folk
songs of the south, operatic mid
concert numbers.

WANT ADS ARE REAL STUFF
When E. P. Spencer, of Ash
hind, lost a tiro and rini while
in the Cottage Grove country, he
did the natural thing to do—he
placed a lost nd ill The Sentinel
and asked that tho tire be left
at the Nelson service station. A
few days later he wrote: “It
pays to advertise. A few days
after placing ail in your pa|>ei
I received word that my tire and
rim wero at Nelson’s awaiting
my pleasure. ”
—TEN THOUSAND A DAY
FOR ADVERTISING.
—Wm. Wrigley, of chewing gum
fume, spends $16,000 every day
for advertising.
—he must get results or he
would not have the money to
spend.
—other advertisers must also get
/exults from their expenditures
and some of them are enormous.
—for instance, pick up the
Saturday Evening Post and it
is never kicking for ads.
—its color pages sell every
week for $8500, I, and the cover
pages bring the same figure;
black and white pages sell at
$7000 per ' issue, and the
' center
spread brings $17,000.
