roads have cost $30,000 a mile, ex-

of miles north and south on roads

boast. Also it will very shortly be

state of Oregou to the Idaho border
line, a distance equal to the total

week’s session and that the guar
antors would have nothing to make
up.
Every year except one the signers
of the contract have had to dig
into their pockets for amounts run
ning from $3 to $13 to make up a
deficit, in addition to carrying the
burden of looking after the details
of the ticket-selling campaign, of
getting the tent ready and of clean
ing up the grounds afterward. It
now seems that there is sufficient
appreciation of chuutauqua to in
sure the ticket sale without great
effort on the part of the guaran
tors. No trouble was experienced in
getting a contract signed for next
year.

tertainment was in keeping with the
high elass of the programs of the
entire session.
Dr. Henry Gaines Hawn, dramatic
and oral English instructor of na
tional reputation, gave the Friday
evening lecture. His subject was
“The Soul of things,” iu which he
espoused a new philosophy applied
to social, business aud civic life
und interspersed his lecture with
interpretations of u number of pop
ular readings. The point he made
was that we do not get the most
out of living, that we pay too dear
ly for pleasures which do not sa tis-
fy, that we take no notice of

help to make us happy, that we
give too much time to a few things

things. He was unquestionably the
most finished speaker who appeared
before the chuutauqua here.
Norman V. l’earce gave the Sat
urday afternoon program, a unique
travel lecture on Australia with an
exhibition of curios from the
world’s curiosity shop, Australia,
where birds have beautiful plumage

ing the month of May, 533 being
fiction, 18 non-fiction and 323 ju
venile. Six uew cards wero taken
out. Fines amounting to $9.51 were
collected. Three new books were
presented to the library, “Saddle
Boys of tho Rockies” by Robert
Martin „nd two new railway books
