That your sins will find yon out never was better illustrated than in the news story which told of the in dieting of seven of those who held positions of trust during the war and used those positions of influ ence to feather their nests. No crime of the war was more repre hensible than that of stealing n profit while the boys in olive drab were making the supremo sacrifice over there. Those unpatriotic ones who used positions of trust as the means of betraying tlicir country and of betraying those who were offering their lives to make safe the lives of those who were exact ing unfair war profits never will be sufficiently punished upon this earth. The Gazette limes poses as some thing of a slate and national insti tution, for which reason the New Year edition wus not confined ex clusivoly to extolling the city of Corvallis as the social, business and industrial hub of the universe, al though 30 pages probably would have been few enough oven for that. The Gazette-Times is at ail times a credit to the city and county which it serves, but the New Year edition shows that it can spread itself when ii so desires. il ment. OF II A ■f r I NEGLECTED FATHER DIES IN COUNTY POOR HOUSE A short time ago an old man, aged SO years, died in the Olmstead county poor house, and a story of ingratitude is disclosed thereby which brings a blush of shame for our boasted civilization. He win at one time n prosperous und success fill contractor and by hard work and frugal economy he accumulated a little property, in addition to bringing up u large family. In an evil Tiny he divided his property among his children, and soon after receiving the cash these ungrateful offspring forgot the generous father —neglected even to provide the ne cessities of life for him. For a time he lived with frieads, but the in evitable day canie when the most charitably disposed could do no more and he was seat to the poor house. Some of the children lived in distant parts, but one of the sons resided in the county with his father. Notwithstanding that all of them were in prosperous circum stances und had been given a good start la life by him, they permitted the old man to die alone sad for saken, a public charge and a pauper. We do not recall just the partic ular part of hades in which the im mortal Dante found the ungrateful, but if the punishment of the whole wore rolled into one scourge it would not be too severe a punish ment for such ingratitude. But, ns likely as not, if the all-wise Ruler should give them their just dues and cast them into the bottomless pit, we are sure this old man would wear callouses on his knees plead ing for their redemption. Such is human nature.—Albert Lea (Minn.; Tribune. Wheu He Smiled. A young man who had just be- come engaged hnd an amazingly large mouth which, when he smiled, si-euied to spread out over his whole face. At the urging of his uewly betrothed sweetheart he went to speak to her father at once. “I—I have come, Mr. Barrett,” he said, beginning to smile at once with the utmost geniality in order to cover up his embarrassment, “to —to ask for your daughter'» hand. I—I—“ "Excuse me,’’ the father mildly interrupted, “but will you kindly doer your mouth for a moment until I can see who you are!" Not According to Program. Three yearvld Janie's mother was called away just an she had nettled the baby on a bench. “Stny here now and watch your little baby brother, Janie,’* she di rected. “I'll be back ta a few min utes. He'll fall asleep presently.’’ Before the few minutes were up a resounding roar startled the moth er. An she burned toward the bench Janie came running to meet her. “Mamma," she called excitedly, "he failed all right, but he wasn't asleep. ’' 4 DON’T LOSE YOUR TEETH Thousands of people are wearing false teeth today because of the ravages of PYORRHEA.
