Town in the Union, Receives It. With the passage by the United States Senate of the bill authorizing the issuance of patents to locators of lands in the Siletz Indian reservation, one of the most spectacular incidents in the history of land fraud investiga tions in Oregon is closed. In most • part, the lands are extremely valuable because of the growth of timber, and a title to the land means that about 40 persons will be able to realize approxi mately $10,000 each by the sale of the lands. In 1902, announcement that the reser vation land might be homsteaded caused a rush of settlers to that country. Most of them took the lands under the law which permitted commutation to be made in 18 months after residence Was established, the settler being re quired to actually make his home upon the lands. The pioneers of the forest cleared some land, erected log cabins, and in some instances planted orchards. At the right time, they offered their final proofs before the land office, which were accepted. The claims were pending for patent in 1905 when disclosures as jto frauds in Oregon caused a Presidential order to be issued requiring all timber and homestead filings to be investigated. By that time, the settlers had leit their lands. They said it was neces sary to go elsewhere in order to secure employment. In 1909, squatters began going onto the claims for the purpose of establis- ing preference rights of entry should the original filings be cancelled by the land office. Test cases were brought in the United States court the most prominent being that of Chester V. Hare against August Birkenfield. The court was asked to issue an injunction restraining Birkenfield from trespass ing upon the lands which Hare had en tered. On two occassions, the court ruled that the proper relief to be sought by Hare would be an action for damages, and dismissed the case. At torney Lafferty then went to Washing ton and presented the situation to members of the House and Senate Committees on pubile lands. People with kidney ills want to be cured. When one suffers the tortures of an aching back, relief is eagerly sought for. There are many remedies today that relieve but do not cure. Here is evidence to prove that Doan’s Kidney Pills cure, and the cure is last ing. L. Mathews, 813 Short St.,Roseburg, Ore., says: “I am glad to confirm my former endorsement of Doan’s Kidney Pills. For several years I was troubled by backache and other symptoms of kidney complaint and all my efforts for relief were unavailing until I procured Doan’s Kidney Pills. -An injury was the cause of my trouble. Being favor ably impressed by several public state ments given in favor of Doan’s Kidney Pills, I procured a box and commenced their use. This remedy strengthened my kidneys and toned up my entire system. I consider Doan’s Kidney Pills the best medicine to be had for the kidneys,” . ' • For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents. City Recorder, Let’s Get Togethet and Hold Farm Notice is hereby given that A. L, Atlee and Claude Nagle have by mutual ers’ Day This Fall. Cottage Grove would do well to ar range for a big farmers’ celebration in this city, say at the park, after the harvests are over this fall. Let’s have a “Farmers’ Day,” and turn the town over to the tillers of the soil; let prizes be offered by merchants for the best displays of cereals and fruits. The Sentinel believes this gathering would not only prove profitable to the farm ers, but would bring the merchants and rurals in closer touch with each other and stimulate trade relations. If prop erly managed the affair would be a grand success. Let the merchants give this matter serious thought, and work out a plan for a harvest celebration. Sheep Shearing Time Over. Sheep shearing which has been in progress during the past six weeks, has about closed for the season with 2 large number of the wool-bearing animals clipped of their hirsute adornment. Considerable quantities have been marketed in Cottage Grove during the past few weeks, and is still being re ceived by the buyers. The price ranges from 17 to 18 cents. The average weight of fleece runs from 8 to 10 pounds, though in some instances as high as 18 pounds has been secured, these being fleeces from Cotswold ani mals. Turpentine From Fir. B. F.
