jopffi VOLUME ,IV VERYSHORTANDSWEET Is Visit of Portland Business Men’s Excursion. ALL SUPPORTERS OF NESMITH Several Impromptu Addresses Deliver ed in Public Square.—Reception Declared Most Cordial of Any Tendered Them. About seventy-five representative business men of the Oregon metropo lis spent thirty minutes in Cottage Grove yesterday, arriving from the south at 12:55 on schedule time and de parting at 1:25, continuing their itinery homeward, after having visited the principal cities along the Southern Pa cific to the California line. The excursionists were greeted at (the passenger station by thé members ,of thé Commercial club and citizens generally. Some were escorted to the headquarters of this commercial organ ization, where a brief period was spent in social intercourse, while others vis ited the business establishments of eus-, tomers and friends. The short stay of these substantial Oregonians did not permit of elaborate entertainment, for" which Cottage Grove enjoys an envi able reputation. In fact the announce ment of their coming requested that no special plans be made for their recep tion, the object of the itinery being to meet the citizens and “view the man ner of the town” in a general way. The reception committee of the Com mercial club had one hundred handsome rose buds, tied with a tiny ribbon on which appeared the words, “A Nesmith County Boutonniere,” and each excur sionist was presented with one of these. Upon reaching the club headquarters, or rather the square in front of the club, Mayor Kime mounted a chair and with a welcome to the visitors intro duced President Hazelton of thè Com mercial club, who extended to the ex cursionists a greeting from the club members. .Mayor Kime then introduc ed Edward Ehrman, president of Ma son, Ehrmari & Co., who stated the ob ject of the itinery was to draw the peo ple nearer to the bosom of Portland. He took occasion to heartily thank the club and citizens of Cottage Grove for the cordial reception tendered the par ty. John F. Carroll managing editor of the Evening Telegram, appreciated the reception given the excursionists, and mentioned the Nesmith county proposition, saying “we are all in favor of it.” L. Samuel, general manager of thé Oregon Life Insurance company, in a neat little talk, was followed by C. Reuger, assistant manager of the Pacific Hardware & Steel company, who said the teip was in the interest of development, and that being the case he could see no reason why every mem ber of the party should not be for the proposed new county.. Dr. Andrew C. Smith was delighted with the reception accorded the Portlanders, saying there was more true Oregonianism exhibited here than the party had seen on the trip. He suggested that three cheers be given for Nesmith county, and thèy were given with an earnestness seldom witnessed on such occasions. “All Aboard” rent the air at this juncture, and the party hurriedly' re traced its steps to the passenger sta tion, and continued its way northward, the train leaving amid shouts from vis itors and visited, the former cheering for success of Nesmith county and the latter bidding its guests God speed. A considerable number of the gentle men forming the party had previously visited Cottage Grove, and expressions of surprise at its material advancement during the past year were heard on all sides. The improved appearance of Main street, the handsome brick struc tures erected last year, the new cement sidewalks, and the general air of pros perity which prevades the town were noted and favorably commented upon. Not a few of the excursionists made in quiry as to proposed Nesmith county, of which this city is the proposed tem porary county seat, and the sentiment prevailed that our‘cause is just and that'the county should be created by the people at the November election. The party represented practically $100,000,000. Their train was one of the most magnificent the Southern Pa cific could supply, not lacking in a sin gle feature of equipment. The party was composed of the fol lowing gentlemen: Tom Richardson, president of the Portland Commercial club. J. R. Rodgers, printing. J. P. Rasmussen, Rasmussen & Co. C.
