COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON, FRIDAY. JAN. 27, 19)0 company of National Guard, in their rifle practice during the past three years. This company was organized April 30th, 1907, nearly three- years ago, and was composed of men living in a com munity, and under conditions that should make them as good rifle shots as could be found any place in the United States. These men were mostly all born and raised ih this community where the rifle is used and understood as well as any other place, and if there is any such thing as a natural rifle shot, thbse men were certainly at that time entitled to be designated as such, but the record of the first year of their tar get practice proved them to be on an average considerably below the record of marksman. The second year they advanced to a considerable extent, mak ing an average record midway between that of marksman and sharpshooter, and now, in this the third year, the record of their practice places the whole company consisting of seventy-two men averaging sharpshooters, a remarkable record, and beyond, the average of the best records of military company either regular or national guardsmen. In order that the citizen may better understand what this means we will il lustrate in this manner: Under battle conditions considerably more than half the shots fired, if fired at the enemy, would have been misses during the first ' year’s practice. During the second year’s practice a trifle over one-half of the shots would each have disabled an enemy. While during the third year a trifle over three-fourths of the shots fired would each find the mark fired at. This company will be continued in this community, and any young man—or old man, if not too old—may enlist in the company, and receive the benefits above mentioned from the government. Large and Enthusiastic Mass Meeting Held Last Night—Some Incontrovertable Facts* Figures Prove Conclusively That Small Coun ties Are More Econpmically Conducted* Decidedly enthusiastic was the mass meeting at the Armory last night, call ed at the instance of the Nesmith coun ty committee to discuss the situation and further the undertaking. There was a unanimity of sentiment in favor of coupty division, and the creation of proposed Nesmith county. A consider able number of persons from various sections of the territory included in the new county was present, and these ex pressed a desire to see the project suc cessfully consummated, offering to ren der such aid as is within their power to bring* about Nesmith county. Indisput able facts and figures were presented showing why the people of the state should support the measure at the polls next November, it meaning greater de velopment of the- territory and conse quently would contribute more largely to a Greater Oregon. The presentation of figures proved conclusively that the smaller counties of the state are more economically conducted, and receive more attention in every particular that tends towards development as a whole than the larger ones. There was quite a large number of ladies in the audience, and they, too, proved themselves to be good boosters. The Cottage Grove brass band, recent ly organized, set the ball rolling, and was followed by the Nesmith quartet, in a booster number. NUMBER 17 paign, ” advanced some logical advice. In 'opening his remarks he said Mr. Spray had “stolen some of his thun der,” but that gentleman simply smiled and didn’t offer to make restitution. “The foundation of success is desire, and the greater the desire the firmer and stronger must be the foundation for success. The success of this under taking depends upon the desire of the community and its united action,” said Mr. Kem, and continuing illustrated how one man could ruin the efforts of the many. In pioneer days every barn raising had an individual who gave the cry of “hee-hoo-hee” as the men exert ed themselves to place the huge tim bers in position, and those who could not lend financial aid to the movement could at least have a “hee-hoo-hee.” It was suggested that it be the sense of the meeting that a committee be . appointed to solicit funds, and Mr. Thompson framed the suggestion into i a motion, which carried unanimously, with the result that Chairman Veatch , appointed C. H. Burkholder, T. C. Wheeler, H. Venske and J. F. Spray as , such committee, whereupon the assem blage dispersed to meet, again soon af ter the November election to celebrate the creation of Nesmith county.
