From volunteering with hospice, Egan Warming Center and the Creswell School Board to being a permanent foster parent, Smathers wants to help and advocate for people in need. “All these different experiences of serving others has impacted my life and makes me want to love people,” she said. Smathers served on the school board for one four-year term that ended in 2019. She didn’t seek a second term because she wanted to spend more time with her seven children (three bio-kids and four medically fragile, permanent foster children) and do more to help underserved children and families. Smathers grew up in poverty with a family of eight children. She said there were times when her basic needs weren’t met, such as having toilet paper or sham- poo and toothbrushes; however, her parents always helped, and she and her siblings learned that they weren’t strug- gling as much as others. That helped instill the importance of service. Their family did everything they could to help others in need. For two years they offered their home to an unhoused man who later died of alco- holism, back out on the streets. He is one of the reasons that Smathers started volunteering at Egan Warming Center. Nick Turtura, site lead at Egan Warming Center, said Natalie is an “outstanding individual with a sweet and outgoing personality.” “She has positively impacted the homeless population within our commu- nity,” he said. “With Natalie it’s hard to distinguish the line between the home- less she serves, and family.” Another formative experience was Above: Dan and Natalie Smathers with their children, Maddie, Izzy, Allie, Emma, Andrew, Cyrina and Tiger. They have three “bio-kids” and permanently foster four medically fragile children. (Faces purposely obscured for privacy.) Left: Dan and Natalie. Besides helping permanently foster four children, Natalie served on the school board and volunteers in hospice and at Egan Warming Center. PHOTOS SUBMITTED when Smathers was in high school. She was always interested in helping people with special needs and volunteered in the life skills classroom. She would help one girl, Bea, get ready for P.E. and help her put on lotion. “It makes me emotional still and it was so many years ago,” Smathers said. “The feeling I got helping her with her lotion filled my soul. I had a love for her and she had love for me, her peer. That had a big impact on me.” With both her father and husband, Dan, having Asperger syndrome, and living with her own learning disabili- ties, Smathers said she’s used to people in her life with differences. She started helping a neighbor of hers who had cere- bral palsy, and noticed how much her bio-children loved him and how much happiness that he brought her family that she wanted to bring that empathy and compassion into her family’s life, which is why she turned to fostering. “I wanted to be a mom and help kids,” she said. “I thought that I could help someone who can’t take care of their own children, take care of my children and have an income at the same time.” Originally she helped co-parent a medically fragile boy in the Springfield area whose parents wanted to see what it would be like to be “mom and dad” instead of caregivers. Smathers said he had “such an impact” on her family CLASSIFIEDS PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES SERVICES Purchase the photos you love that first appeared in The Chronicle and Emer- ald Valley Magazine. I encouraged the teacher to hang in there. Give it another year before retiring. We discussed the lunar signs of the children who would soon be making their way into her classroom over the next few years. She trusted me and decided to wait on retire- ment. I gave her some tips regarding how to accommo- date the needs of her Ox and Tiger classroom. She appre- ciated learning the reason behind her students person- alities and behaviors. A couple of years later, this teacher and I met again. She was happy, her anxiety had subsided, and she told me I was right. The following two years of students were much easier, and their pleasant temperaments were a joy to engage with daily; and she was still teaching. *** I enjoy hearing from you and would like to answer your questions in the column.
