Creswell boys act quickly
to stop beach fire

OCT. 16, 1969 — Beach
fires don’t stand much of a
chance with four Creswell
boys around. The fire-
fighters, 16-year-old Bob
Holt, his brothers Nat and
Paul, both 15, and their
friend Kelly Davis, 13,
made short work of a beach
fire at Heceta Beach near
Florence last Sunday.
The boys were stay-
ing at the Holts’ beach
cabin when the fire started
nearby at about 5:45 p.m.
While Mrs. Holt called
the Siuslaw Rural Fire
Department to report the
fire, the boys started to
fight the fire.They formed a
bucket brigade to get water
to the area and started beat-
ing out small pockets of
flames with “wet brooms
and rags.”
When Fire Chief Ivan
Welty and his firemen
arrived on the scene about
10 minutes later, the boys
had the fire under control
and almost out.
“If we had more young
men like these four,” Welty
said, “Beach fires would be
less of a problem.”
When asked how the
fire started, Bob said, “We
don’t know, we just felt
someone should put it out
before it reached some of
the nearby houses.” The
boys calmly poured a little
more water on a smoking
tuft of beach grass as Fire
Chief Welty nodded in
approval.

Alexander is stable
after being hit by car
OCT. 31, 1984 — A 1984
graduate of Creswell High
School was listed in stable
condition at Sacred Heart
General Hospital Monday
evening after he was struck
Sunday by a vehicle on
Holbrook Lane.
Robbie Alexander, 18, had
his condition upgraded from
serious to stable Monday and
was being held for observa-
tion, according to a hospi-
tal spokesperson. He had
suffered head injuries in the
accident.

OCT. 10, 1984 — A hear-
ing that could decide the fate
of Mazama Timber Products
of Creswell is set for Oct.
26 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 412
at the Federal Building in
Eugene, Mazama comptroller
Steve Gaughn said Monday.
At the hearing, a U.S.
Bankruptcy Court judge is
expected to rule on motions
made last month by Oregon
Bank that would allow the
bank to take control of the
Creswell mill.
The bank’s motion for
“relief from automatic stay,”
which would almost surely
put at least a temporary end
to production at the mill,
and its motion to convert
Mazama’s to a Chapter 7
bankruptcy, which would
also probably result not only
in the mill’s closure but also
the auctioning of its machin-
ery, equipment and land,
were postponed last month
by the judge.
Oregon Bank is the largest
creditor of the Creswell firm,
which filed under Chapter
11 Bankruptcy Code early
last year. Oregon Bank has
loaned Mazama more that
$12 million over recent
years. Mazama owner Forrest
Solomon deeded over his
Emerald Valley Forrest Inn
and Golf Course and other
properties to the bank earlier
this year as partial settlement
of the company’s debt.
Gaughn said Monday that
“lots of things hinge on that
hearing,” but that “busi-
ness-wise, things are going
pretty good” at the mill.
