Wigzell, shown above as he completed the course in darkness Oct. 6 some 24 hours after he began, wasn’t without occasional prob- lems – not to mention pain – during the event. “The swim had approxi- mately 1,200 starters in an area that was only about 150 yards wide. It was just a mass start,” Wigzell said. “The water was a perfect 80 degrees and clear as a bell, but I lost my goggles about halfway through. It was kind of a problem swim- ming in the salt water with- out goggles.” “During the bike ride my chain came off, and I had a flat at about 90 miles. One stretch of about 18 miles was a steep uphill with wind in your face.” “In the marathon, I was really tough to get through from mile 21 to mile 23. That was a complete struggle.” Wigzell wasn’t the only competitor suffering, though. “Every aid station had people in it with IVs stuck in them,” he said. Tough as it was, though, the Iron Man Triathalon was “just a great experience,” Wigzell said. “The last mile and a half was just incredible. It was such an up or a lift or what- ever to make the turn and see the lights and hear the announcer. And it was just incredible to go through that finish line. There’s no way to explain how that felt.” Got a News Tip? Call Erin at The Chronicle 541-895-2197
