Eugene historian and author Steve McQuiddy will
give a presentation on book “Here On the Edge,” a
unique piece of Oregon history at History Pub at 6 p.m.
at the Axe and Fiddle, 657 E. Main St., Cottage Grove.
McQuiddy explores what it means to take an unpop-
ular stand, based on conscience, and how that act of
personal integrity carried forward to broaden its impact.
Key members of the Waldport CPS camp coalesced into
the Beat Movement, which in itself became the catalyst
for a renaissance of new thinking in America.

CRESWELL — The Creswell Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 4039 earned “All American” status for fi scal year 2018-19.
The Department of Oregon (DO) also earned All American.
The commander of the DO is Rick Higgins, of Creswell, a past
commander of Post 4039.
Creswell Post 4039 ranked third overall in its size category.
Requirements for All American are participating in national
programs, which include Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen
Youth Scholarship program, teacher award, partnering with
a military unit, distributing buddy poppies, having a trained
veteran service offi cer who helps veterans apply for VA bene-
fi ts, and increasing post membership over the previous year.
The post is also involved in a number of community service
activities which include bingo, Cub and Boy Scouts, memorial
services and safety activities. State Department requirements
include those listed for the post, plus participating in legislative
programs in Washington D.C. and in national veterans’ services.

Susan Marion Martin, 84,
of Dorena, died on Aug. 19,
2019.
She was born in Hood
River on Dec. 3, 1934 to
Ephriam Ashley and Marion
Ninnette (Hollinghead)
Miller.
Susan graduated from
Hood River High School
and was an assembly worker
for General Motors, Epson
Computers and Roseburg
Lumber. She enjoyed
gardening, cake decorating,
making cookies and clean-
ing floors. In the 1970s,
Susan rode dirt bikes.
She was a member of
Good Samaritan Church in
Dorena. She married Ernest
Samuel Martin on March 11,
2006 in Woodburn.
She is survived by her
husband, Sam; sons, Stan
(Joa n ne) R icha rd son,
Howard (Dawn) Richardson
and Daniel (Ba rba ra)
Richardson; stepdaugh-
ters, Sheryl Shumway and
Brenda Speas; stepson,
Ernie Martin; 14 grand-
children; and numerous
great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will
be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday,
Sept. 8 at Good Samaritan
Church. A graveside service
was at Sears Cemetery on
Aug. 26.
