Man dies after attacking police with knife
Lane County Sheriff’s deputies
responded to a Friday call around 10
p.m. regarding a dispute between a man
and woman in the 37000 block of Row
River Road in Cottage Grove.
Later, at 1 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office
received two 911 calls reporting that
the same people were back at the loca-
tion and again in a dispute. Deputies
responded to the location and were
initially unable to locate the woman,
and received information that the man
was in an outbuilding on the property.
Deputies used a loudspeaker in an
attempt to get the man, Larry Leonard
Lowry Jr., to come out of the outbuild-
ing. After several minutes, the man
exited the building and came at depu-
ties with a large, fixed-blade knife.
Deputies shot the man as he advanced
on them, and then performed CPR for
several minutes until medics arrived and
pronounced the man deceased.

weekend and urge the community to
celebrate safely and responsibly.
Police would like to remind driv-
ers that if they are impaired by any
substance, alcohol or drugs, they
should not get behind the wheel of a
vehicle. Driving while impaired is ille-
gal. "If You Feel Different, You Drive
Different."
Community members are encour-
aged to plan ahead and celebrate the
Labor Day weekend safely. If you plan
to drink, plan for a sober driver to take
you home. Party and BBQ hosts are
encouraged they ensure all guests leave
with a sober driver.
In an effort to increase commu-
nity safety the Springfield Police
Department will increase DUII and
distracted driving patrols through the
weekend. Increases in DUII patrols are
possible through grant funding made
available by the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration.
Springfield Police ask that if you
observe a suspected impaired driver,
call 911 and monitor the car from a safe
distance until police arrive.
The Lane County Sheriff's Office
is using grant money from the Oregon
Department of Transportation and the
Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association.
