To the Editor, I would ask all voters to carefully ex- amine Measure 114 and to understand the implications of passing it. Measure 114 sets up a process for gun purchasers to follow to get a permit to purchase a firearm. This involves provid- ing photo ID, finger prints, proof of a gun safety course that covers the effects of gun violence and live fire training. The measure will also ban the sale and possession of large capacity magazines that is defined as more than 10 rounds. Large capacity magazines owned before the ban are grandfathered, but basically prohibited from use off of a fire- arms range or private property. CHL own- ers will not be exempt from this magazine regulation. What the public needs to understand, is that this measure sets aside no money for police departments that are “asked” to implement this program. There is a $65 fee per permit application, but for a small police department like ours, we will have to take away from other duties to assist the large number of applicants this program will create. I know I would want a permit, just in case I had a firearm failure/theft and I needed to replace it. It is important to note, this measure does not mandate that police agencies have to provide this applicant pro- cess, some police departments may opt not to do so. Almost everybody will need to secure additional training since the current training programs are deficient for the effects of gun violence requirement. Most applicants will need to complete a firearms live fire training program also. There is a severe shortage of these ranges to process this many people. Many long-time sports people are scratch- ing their heads on this aspect, they probably could teach the classes, but you know the state is going to require certified instructors. There are no provisions in this measure that provide funding or certifications of classes for this measure. One of the points being made is about people who buy a firearm and immediately commit suicide, yes this may help in that re- gard. Who it will not help is people who have suddenly been thrust into a dangerous situation like domestic violence or people who have firearms stolen, you will have to go through this process that is guaranteed to be lengthy before you will be able to secure your constitutional right to a firearm. It will be a true statement that people will die be- cause of this measure. He doesn’t talk about much of anything else. He has DONE nothing of real substance to improve the community. To try and beef up his im- age, he talks about some mediocre accom- plishments in which he really played no part. Nothing on what he plans for the future of the sheriff’s office. The accomplishments he talks about on his website belong to the hard-working men and women of the Sheriff’s Office and the employees who support the Sher- iff’s Office at the County Courthouse. You all are a fantastic team. What are his plans for the future of the sheriff’s office and law and order for our community? After reading the voter’s pamphlet, nothing. I tried PRECIP looking at his website for his plans 0 for the sheriff’s office. Nothing again. 0 YouTube. Nothing. 0 Usually, candidates will tell you 0 what they want to try to accomplish 0 while in office. Why hasn’t he created visible goals for the office for the pub- 0 lic to see? 0 If he does have a plan. He is not 0 Vernonia Weather September 2022 DATE 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 The large magazine ban in this measure is flying in the face of the recent SCOTUS ruling on firearms, so it will in effect be un- constitutional upon passage. The Supreme Court recently overturned the US 9 th Circuit Court’s ruling in California that banned large magazines over 10 rounds. The stand- ing ruling as of today until the US 9 th Circuit reconsiders its ruling under the new guid- ance from the SCOTUS is the panel de- cision ruled by the US 9 th courts in 2020, which ruled the California magazine ban unconstitutional. It is never good to push a measure that is unconstitutional on its face, it is an affront to the citizens to do so. If we really are trying to curb gun vio- lence, we really need to focus on the people who are committing these crimes. We have all seen the results of taking law enforce- ment’s focus off of those who they knew were committing crimes and the DAs that are failing to fully prosecute career crimi- nals. You need to ask yourself, why isn’t he posting a plan? Why is he not being transparent with the community? Is there other stuff he is not being transparent about? If he doesn’t have a plan, we have nothing to hold him accountable for, do we? So, when he does nothing, we aren’t shocked. When he does do something, some people think he is the best thing since sliced bread. So, what does it matter if a sheriff’s of- fice supposedly has an experienced sheriff, if he cannot use his experience to plan, what direction does the office go in? Confusing? It sure is, especially if you work at the office and don’t know what direction you should be going in. Changes day to day. How is he going to lead his team without a purpose or direction? That so-called experience means nothing. You must be able to plan and think about what happens if this happens and what I am going to do. If you don’t set goals and plan, you are blinding yourself and your troops, and your troops don’t know where to go either. What happens when you don’t have a clear direction? Each person will cre- ate their plan and approach to the problem. Then you have 60 different plans, every- body running over each other with no com- mon goal. Human nature is taking over. Why doesn’t he have a plan? Why isn’t he being transparent? Is he spending our tax dollars the right way? Is he putting ethical and knowledgeable people in the right po- sitions to help develop plans? Maybe you should ask him about some of this stuff he has done and then ask for the data to back it up. A plan is something a real candidate and sheriff develops to let the community and staff at the sheriff’s office know what direction they are headed. It allows the vot- ers to hold him or her accountable, so when they do nothing, we can move on to the next person. A plan is something we can hold the candidate responsible for while he is in office. Brian Pixley is scared to develop a plan, or is he incapable of creating such a plan? He doesn’t want accountability for himself, but he does want accountability for others. Do your research? I have done mine. I worked in that management disaster for three years. Hold Sheriff Pixley accountable for doing NOTHING for the past four years. Vote Terry Massey for Sheriff.
