18 Obituaries/Community September 15 2022 In Memory of... Maria Lydia Buehner Maria Lydia Buehner, 74, a resident of the Forest Grove com- munity, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at OHSU in Portland. Lydia was a friendly, giving, and caring woman that deeply loved her family and always went out of her way to help others. She was born October 10, 1947, in Colorado City, Texas, the daugh- ter of the late Juan Gallegos and Juanita Rico Dominguez. She spent her early childhood in Hondo, Texas, and at a young age moved with her family to Oregon, settling in the Hillsboro community. She completed her high school education in Oregon and soon thereafter received a scholarship to attend the Beaver- ton Beauty School, graduating on June 19, 1969. Lydia married Daniel Otto Buehner on February 18, 1968, and their son James was born the same year. The family resided first in Hillsboro and then in For- est Grove where they lived until Daniel’s death on July 16, 1977. In 1980 Lydia met Toney Johnson, who would become her life-long partner. They made their home in the Forest Grove community until 1996, when they moved to Verno- nia. They lived in Vernonia for 18 years, until they returned to the Forest Grove community, where she had resided since. Lydia was preceded in death by Toney on February 22, 2015 after spending 35 years together. Lydia was also preceded in death by her brother Romero Dominguez, and her sis- ter Sylvia Garza. Lydia worked as a beautician for over 53 years. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her clients and getting to know them on a personal basis. She did it all, from beehives to pixie cuts, with grace, a wonderful smile, and friendly conversation. It was the passion of her life and she deeply enjoyed the deep friendships she made over the years. She was an active member of St. Anthony’s Parish in For- est Grove, however, she also en- joyed attending Spanish masses at St. Alexander’s in Cornelius. Lydia loved spending time with her family and friends, gardening, cooking, and helping others when they needed a hand. Lydia is survived by her son Gabriel Benites of Hondo, Tex- as, her son and daughter-in-law James and Charmaine Buehner of Ventura, California, her son and daughter Justin Johnson and Ju- lie Ana Johnson of Forest Grove, Oregon; her sister and brother- in-law Gracie and Martin Garcia of Hillsboro, Oregon, her sister and brother-in-law Yolanda Lo- zano and Juan Lozano of Eugene, Oregon, her brother and partner Daniel Dominguez and Emma Montelongo of Salem, and her brother and sister-in-law Rick and Pamela Dominguez of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving are her nine grandchildren, and 15 nieces and nephews. Daniel E. Koch May 21, 1927 ~ August 31, 2022 Two important things hap- pened on May 21, 1927, Lind- bergh landed in France and Dan Koch was born. He died August 31, 2022. He was the fifth of eleven children. Dan grew up on the family farm in Luverne, North Dakota. He attended Grand Prai- rie school for 11 years and trans- ferred to Valley City High School where he graduated. After graduation he enlisted in the military and served in the Army Air Corps. When he was discharged, he returned home and farmed for a while. He was introduced to his wife Hope when he was to escort her when she was Dan’s sister Molly’s maid of honor. They mar- ried in 1949 and have celebrated 73 years of marriage. They worked their way west through a series of jobs and relo- cations, and arrived in Columbia County in 1963, their 37 th home. In 1967 he started the family business which continues to oper- ate to this day from the same loca- tion where it was started. He was a 52-year member of the Masonic fraternity and a 52- year member of Eastern Star. He was a voracious reader, an excel- lent card player, but most of all he related wonderful stories about his friends and family. His son Marty and his great- grandson Brian preceded him in passing. He is survived by his wife Hope, two sons, five grand- children, two great-grandchil- dren, and four sisters. There will be a Memorial Service at the Columbia County Fairground pavilion on Septem- ber 18, 2022 at 2:30 pm. Memo- rials should be made to Mizpah Chapter OES. Senior News and Notes By Karen Miller IT WAS A WONDERFUL DAY AUGUST 12 at our first Annual Senior Picnic at our new building! We had a room FULL of folks, some new, and some regulars that join in on our Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays delicious lunch meals put together by chefs Theresa and Liz. If you aren’t already a part of our fun loving lunch gang, we would love to have you. Enjoy these picnic photos, one of Necia Dewitt, who got the honors of receiving a gift certificate at our senior thrift store by being the ‘most mature in age’ sitting at her lunch table. Now at the age of 98, that was a given. The other photo is of three lovely helper ladies, thanks Paula, Angie, and Tobie. Roy Behnke brought his game of Cornhole he made himself, and was I shocked to heave the beanbag into the hole my first try. I didn’t want to blow my image of a hotshot so I quit after that. SIGNING OFF from the cowboy state of Wyoming visiting family… SEE YA’ around town again soon… THE SENIOR CENTER BOARD WISHES TO GIVE RECOGNITION to two of our special members that are no longer with us due to their recent passing: Sykes Mitchell a longtime former board member, and Eleanor Thompson who faithfully continued playing drums into her 80s with the Golden Oldies Band at our old senior building. It’s folks like that that keep our center going, in either the daily operation or bringing senior member fun and laughter. Come be a part of the Senior Center story.
