VRFPD January 20 2022 7 Vernonia Rural Fire Protection District Vernonia Fire Hosts Flammable Liquids and Gas Training The Vernonia Rural Fire Protec- tion District had the opportunity to host an important training session for local firefighters. Flammable Liquids and Gas, provided by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) is crucial to the continuing education of both career and volunteer firefighters within our district. We have worked for over 12 months to bring this training to our fire department. This course is just one of many required to complete the DPSST Firefighter 2 training certifica- tion. Discourse focuses on the ability of the firefighter to control a flammable liquids and gas fire, such as a propane tank that could be on fire, or the poten- tial of fire to be present around a natural gas meter. This course is one of few that allow us to have controlled live fire events right in the parking lot of our own fire station. The gas props that are used for this training are controlled by a re- mote, allowing the operator to stop the flow of gas and effectively extinguish the fire in the event of a safety issue or emergency during training. We are excited that we were able to provide this high-level training to our dedicated career and volunteer firefighters for the Vernonia Fire Dis- trict. Over the next several months we anticipate continuing to train with props provided by DPSST as we are on the waiting list for the vertical ven- tilation prop next. We are also working on acquiring a structure for training just south of the city limits. We will continue to share these exciting train- ing opportunities with our community as our firefighters continue to grow in their ability to aggressively attack fires, provide efficient search opera- tions, and increase our effectiveness as a fire district to respond to these in- cidents both inside of our own district and at the request of our neighbors. The next meeting is scheduled for February 8, 2022 at the fire station, 555 E. Bridge St. Prior to the regular Board Meeting there will be a Supplemental Budget Workshop at 6:30.
