Bonamici Helps Deliver $87.7 Million to Oregon
Families to Assist with Home Energy Costs
To the Editor,
The Vernonia Senior Center would like
to extend its thanks to the community for
the support of our center and the gener-
ous donations we received during De-
cember from several local individuals
and families. We’re excited to be open-
ing the new building for noon meals for
seniors after almost ten years, and we are
gradually adding new activities during our
open times on Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Fridays. Please visit our Vernonia Senior
Center Facebook page for information,
and if you’re 60 or over, do consider be-
coming a member so you can receive our
monthly newsletter with menus, calendars,
and other items of interest.

nounced the delivery of $87.7 million
to Oregon through the Low-Income
Home Energy Assistance Program
(LIHEAP) through the American Res-
cue Plan and the state’s annual funding
allocation. LIHEAP provides grants
to state agencies to help low-income
families manage costs associated with
home energy bills, energy crises, and
minor energy-related home repairs.

a priority during the ongoing pan-
demic,” said Congresswoman Bon-
amici. “Since 2020, I have been call-
ing for increased LIHEAP funding so
no one has to decide between paying
their energy bills or buying food and
medication. This injection of federal
funds will more than double Oregon’s
typical annual funding and allow more
households to receive support with
their heating and utility bills.”
“One of the hardest parts of
our jobs at CAT is when we hear from
someone who needs help but there
are no more funds available. That is
too often the case with heating assis-
tance,” said Dan Brown, Executive

Inc. in Clatsop, Columbia, and Tilla-
mook counties. “We appreciate Con-
gresswoman Bonamici’s advocacy
for additional LIHEAP funding. With
these new resources, we will be able
to help many more seniors and fami-
lies stay warm this winter.”
More than 90% of households
receiving LIHEAP include at least one
person with a disability, a child under
18, a veteran, or a senior citizen. As
Oregonians continue to experience the
effects of the COVID pandemic and
omicron surge, this critical assistance
will help families, seniors, and other
vulnerable Oregonians afford the
costs of staying warm this winter.

Purr-fect Pals
Meet James. This seven month old boy is full of adventure
and has lots of love to give. When he first arrived at the
shelter he was pretty scared and timid. As time has gone on
he has just gotten full of more love. James does not seem to
mind other cats, however we would either like to place him
with his brother Jim or with a female cat that is older and
already established in the home. He has had limited exposure
to young kids and dogs, so a quiet, calm home is probably
going to be best. If you are interested in meeting him we ask
that you please email adoptions@columbiahumane.org in
order to obtain an application for adoption. His adoption fee is
$125 which includes his current vaccinations, neuter, micro-
chip, and treatment for fleas and worms.
2084 Oregon Street, St. Helens, OR 97051
Hazel, through no fault of her own, is back up for
adoption. Coming back into the shelter at 9 years old, this
little lady has been completely vetted and was found to be
in great health. As with any older dog, she does have a little
arthritis but that can be easily managed. Hazel is looking for
a home that she can retire in, a home with a fenced-in
backyard, a dog bed and maybe even a couch with an extra
lap to lay her head in. We do know that she doesn’t do well
with cats and if she is to go with another dog it will need to
be an older male that just wants a pal not really a playmate.
If you think you might have what Hazel needs please email
adoption@columbiahumane.org in order to obtain an
application. She is current on vaccinations, has been
treated for fleas and worms, is microchipped, and spayed.
