Schools January 20 2022 11 School Board Report At the January 13, 2022 School Board Meeting: District Returns to Distance Learn- ing – Superintendent Aaron Miller told the Board the District was re- turning to Distance Learning for two weeks, beginning January 18, to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 vi- rus. In-person learning is scheduled to begin again on January 31. (See full story on front page.) School Board Approves Adjusted Instructional Calendar – The Board voted 7-0 to approve the proposal pre- sented by the Administration to make- up five student contact days missed due to COVID closures prior to the start of the Winter Break, and snow closures in early January. School will now be Board members Stacey Pelster, Amy Cieloha, and Joanie Jones wearing the Logger gear they received for School Board Appreciation Month. in session for students on January 24, March 4, April 22, May 27, and June 17. Board was recognized for their service to the communi- ty in honor of School Board Appreciation Month. While a number of Board members were attending the meeting virtually, Board members Stacey Pelster, Amy Cieloha, and Joanie Jones were at the meeting in-person and re- ceived a gift of Logger gear for their service. School Board members attending virtually were Susan Wag- ner, Greg Kintz, Scott Rick- ard , and Javoss McGuire. Student Report – Donald Iem, the Public Relation Officer for the Student Council, updated the Board on student activities, assemblies, sports, and other VHS Germany Trip Canceled Due to the spike in Omi- cron, and the effects of this on overseas travel, the Vernonia High School Germany Trip will be postponed until next year, Spring Break, 2023. The school will roll over all funds raised to next year’s trip. Vernonia School Board Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting is scheduled for February 10, at 6:00 pm. Please check the District’s website for updates/changes: www.vernonia.k12. or.us events, and said students are trying to maintain a positive attitude during CO- VID. Board Gives Final Approval for Su- perintendent Retirement Timeline – The Board voted 7-0 to give a final ap- proval of the request from Superinten- dent Aaron Miller to move his official retirement date to January 31, 2022 and rehire him effective February 1, 2022 through June 30, 2022.
