In Memory of...
John David DeHart
John David DeHart of
Portland, Oregon passed away
on September 18, 2021. He
was born on May 25, 1937 in
Vernonia, Oregon to Artemas
and Maggie DeHart. He grew
up in Vernonia.
There is nothing that
David could not repair, a man
of all trades, fixing things be-
cause of necessity and need. He
was using his engineering and
mechanical skills to remedy
problems. David was born to
fly. He earned a private pilot’s
license when he was 15 years
old, owned a small airplane and
eventually got a commercial
pilot’s license. He was inter-
ested in many things: wood-
working, carving, oil painting,
parachuting, watercolor paint-
ing, and always engineering to
make things easier to use. From
a young age, he spent many
hours and days hunting with his
father in the coastal mountains.
He loved camping and being
outdoors, enjoying the beauty
that surrounded him.
In the Navy David
faced death when a jet blast
sent him over the side of the
aircraft carrier toward the Pa-
cific Ocean. He landed on a
catwalk halfway down the side
of the carrier. Fortunately for
him he had only suffered a seri-
ous leg injury.
His parents preceded
him in death, as did his sib-
lings, Otha, Thurman, Artemas
Leon, Mitchell, Dorothy, Les-
ter, Tempie, and two infants:
Alvin and Alice. Surviving are
his wife of 60 years, Joyce;
children, Deborah (Chris), Su-
san, and Michael (Melanie);
grandchildren, Bryce, Amanda,
and Madeline; great-grandchil-
dren, O’Cyrus and Evelyn; his
sister Betty; and many nieces
and nephews.
David was a wonderful
dad and husband. We are filled
with gratitude for having lived
in the sunshine of such a great
man. May the wings of angels
carry David to his peace.
Services were held at
Willamette National Cemetery
in Portland on September 29,
2021.
