VHS Sports Report
Girls Basketball – The Vernonia Lady Loggers con-
tinued their winning ways in the Northwest League
and remain undefeated on the season with a 7-0 record
after defeating Neah-Kah-Nie 47-38 on Friday, June
11.
“This is one of the most cohesive groups I’ve
ever coached,” said head coach Jim Krahn. “They re-
ally are playing together at a high level.”
Senior Jayden Hartman and junior Brooklynn
Walters have been playing at the guard positions and
scoring, rebounding, and playing strong defense. Ju-
nior Audrey Hill and sophomore Kortnie Adams have
provided good defense and rebounding inside. Soph-
omores Kaylee Whiteman and Bailey Nordahl have
been playing some important minutes and contribut-
ing.
“They’ve really played excellent basketball
so far,” said Krahn.
Vernonia pulled out a 28-27 non-league win
against Colton on June 2, defeated Nestucca 47-37 on
June 7, and handled Knappa 39-24 on June 9.
The Lady Loggers were scheduled to finish
this COVID shortened season with games against Gas-
ton on June 16 and Nestucca on June 18.

a chance to compete for a state title
in a tournament format. It was un-
clear whether any kind of league or
district playoffs will occur.

ship during the week of June 21,
Wrestling – Head coach Chuck
Calhoun’s small squad keeps rack-
ing up individual victories.
On June 3 Vernonia hosted
a meet, where senior Wyatt Jones
won three matches, all by pin, as
did junior Cody West, while junior
Brandon Depue won all four of his
matches, three by pin. Senior Pete
Crystal added two more wins for
the Loggers and sophomore Max
Anderson earned a win as well.
“Cody West did an excellent
job and avenged his only loss this
season, which shows he’s really
turning a corner,” said coach Cal-
houn.
At Knappa on June 8 the team
went 12-2 with 11 pins. Depue
won all five of his matches, Crystal won four, Jones
won two, and freshman Alex Shaw won his first match
of the season. “It was a big day for Alex, getting that
first win out of the way,” said Calhoun. “We had a great
showing and we were competitive in every match.”

At Yamhill-Carlton on June 9 Jones won both
his matches by pin. Depue won three matches, all by
pin. Crystal wrestled up a weight class and lost two
matches at 170 pounds.
On June 15 at Neah-Kah-Nie Depue won two
matches and moved his record to 18-0 on the season.
Jones won all three of his matches and is also 18-0.
West won three matches and has now won his last 10
matches in a row. Anderson also won another match
and he and Shaw continue to progress.
“Even though this has been a challenging year
for everyone, Brandon and Wyatt have been team
leaders,” said Calhoun. They show up for practice,
even when they’re hurt, and still work out when they
could be doing other fun things. Wyatt is always the
busiest guy in the workout room and doesn’t shy away
from hard work. These young men keep meeting ev-
ery challenge in a difficult year.”
The date for the District Meet has been
changed to June 17 at Nestucca High School. Depue
at 113 pounds, Jones at 138, and West at 220 will all be
seeded #1 at Districts, with Crystal earning a #3 seed.
A State Championship is scheduled for June 25-26 at
Sweet Home.
