10 Schools June 3 2021 VHS Sports Report: Logger Athletes Bring Home Medals from State Track Championship Vernonia’s track and field athletes competed well at the State Track and Field Championships, held at East Linn High School in Union on May 15. Head coach John Roady’s boys finished 12 th in team scoring out of 35 teams and the girls took 21 st place out of 34 teams. Senior Nick Costley once again led the boys with a 2 nd place finish in the 300 me- ter hurdles, 5 th place in the 110 meter high hurdles, and also grabbed the last spot on the medal stand with his 8 th place finish in the triple jump. Freshman Delaney Dreager had a great meet for the girls, finishing 3 rd with a Personal Record (PR) in the 3000 meters along with an 8 th place finish in the 1500. Coach Roady said Costley had to make his at- tempts in the triple jump at the same time the hurdles events were taking place which had an impact on his performance. “He would have done better in the triple jump if it wasn’t for the scheduling, but otherwise he had another outstanding day,” said Roady. “Delaney is just a freshman and a very focused young lady,” he said about his other star athlete. “I believe she is just scratching her potential.” Junior Sadie Gump took 5 th place in the 800 with a PR and added an 8 th place finish in the 3000. For the boys, senior Pete Crystal took 3 rd in the pole vault, clearing 12’ for a PR and followed that up with a 6 th place finish in the high jump. “Pete did amazing considering he was vaulting in the rain,” said Roady. Sophomore Evan Miller finished 6 th in the Left - Right: Nick Costley, Sadie Gump and Delaney Dreager, and Brandon Depue 3000 with a PR and also finished 14 th in the 1500. “Evan made a huge improvement on his PR in the 3000 considering he came into the meet ranked 14 th , and it was even more impressive because he doubled in the 1500” said Roady. “Since he’s only a sophomore I’m hoping for big things from him in the next couple of years.” Sophomore Max Anderson just missed medal- ling with a 9 th place finish in the long jump and placed 13 th in the triple jump, and sophomore Jarren Joslin finished 12 th in the javelin. “Jarren is another young athlete who got some great experience and should con- tinue to improve,” said Roady. In the relays the Logger boys team of Seth Scheuerman, Ty Clapshaw, Anderson, and Costley fin- ished 12 th in the 4x400, while the girls 4x400 team of Kortnie Adams, Eloise Pedersen, Gump, and Draeger took 11 th . The girls 4x100 team, which had won the VERNONIA LOGGER STADIUM CAMPAIGN District did not compete at State because several ath- letes had other engagements. Wrestling – New head coach Chuck Calhoun has just a small group of wrestlers out this season, but he says it’s a talented and dedicated group. Calhoun has three wrestlers returning from last year’s District winning team who qualified for the State Championship, including junior Brandon Depue and seniors Pete Crystal and Wyatt Jones. The squad already received an invite to wres- tle against Tigard and Lake Oswego high schools, two of the premier big school programs in the state, where the Vernonia wrestlers went 5-2 on the day. “I was really happy with that,” said Calhoun. “Brandon won his match, Wyatt went 2-0, and Pete drew one of the toughest kids there and did pretty well for awhile.” continued on page 11 Imagine this...
