On the Shelves
By Shannon Romtvedt
We are pleased to announce that we are now
open! Our hours have changed temporarily as
we gradually work toward making our building
and services available. Look for more information
about our services and hours in the “Did You
Know” section of this article.
The theme for Summer Reading this year
is “Imagine Your Story.” Summer Reading is for
children, birth through age 14. Families can sign
up online and pick up program materials at the
Library starting June 22. Receive a book bag (one
per family), reading time log, and take home craft
kits and activities.
Sign up link for Summer Reading is:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LBGPSSJ . Or
link to the sign up page through our website or
Facebook page.
Children can earn prize drawing tickets
by reading and participate in a scavenger hunt
for a free dessert at Islands Grill. Scavenger Hunt
instructions and activity sheet will be included
with the Summer Reading packet. Find the
book symbol (pictured right)
in the window of 10 different
businesses along Bridge Street.
Write down the names of the
businesses on your activity
sheet and turn it in to the
Library for a coupon to Islands
Grill (free dessert!). You will
not need to enter the building of any business
to complete the Library Scavenger Hunt, but
shopping local is encouraged!
Thank you to Islands Grill and Jack’s Hobo
Bakery for sponsoring our Summer Reading
program this year! We know COVID-19 closures
and restrictions have been tough on our local
businesses. We did not ask all of our regular
sponsors this year but we appreciate all the
support you have given in previous years. Thank
you to all the small businesses in our community
that help fund and support activities.
Upcoming Events
Summer Reading performers have been cancelled
this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. We always
have a craft available in the Library to take home
with you. And we will be releasing two special
take home projects for kids during the summer:
Rainbow Felted Geodes (project designed by
LeBrie Rich PenFelt Studio) the week of June 29
and Slime Kits (designed by Isabelle Martinez and
Emily Burton) the week of July 6.
Other opportunities may pop up as the
summer progresses. Please watch for our events
in Vernonia’s Voice, our website, or Facebook page.

Oregon Group Pushes Change to Redistricting continued from front page
the state had seen a 20% increase in un-
evenly distributed population growth.
Republicans controlled both the House
and the Senate, Democratic Governor
John Kitzhaber vetoed proposed plans,
and House Democrats walked out for
five-days to avoid a quorum when Re-
publicans tried to push through a plan
without the Governor’s approval. Re-
districting then fell to Democratic Sec-
retary of State Bill Bradbury, whose fi-
nal plan was challenged in court, but was
eventually upheld by the State Supreme
Court. In 2011 the Legislature reached
compromise plans for redistricting after
bipartisan and acrimonious debate; those
plans were approved without legal chal-
lenges.
According to Common Cause
Oregon, a nonpartisan public interest
group working to give people a voice
in the political process, over 96% of in-
cumbent politicians were re-elected in
Oregon since 2012. “The system today
benefits those in power, letting politi-
cians choose their own voters instead
of the voters choosing them. We favor
maps with fair districts that serve the
interests of all the people and that al-
low fresh blood instead of protecting in-
cumbent politicians,” they say on their
website where they endorse the current
People Not Politicians campaign. The
campaign has also been endorsed by the
League of Women Voters of Oregon, Or-
egon Farm Bureau Federation, Taxpayer
Association of Oregon, and Oregon
State Chamber of Commerce.
