To the Editor,
The Angora Hiking Club
turns 100 years old this year. It has
survived the Spanish Flu of 1918,
the Depression of 1929, World War
II, and the pandemic of 2020. How
has it managed to survive all these
years? It has offered a respite from
work, stress, and depression, invit-
ing folks to come out and enjoy na-
ture.
It all began on July 4, 1920
when 18 members of the Knights of
Pythias hiked to the top of Saddle
Mountain. At the summit, they read
the Declaration of Independence
and sang the Star Spangled Ban-
ner and other patriotic songs. They
renamed themselves the Angoras

Columbia Humane Society
Featured Dog
Baskin is a recent addition to the shelter. This
two-year-old little girl is very sweet and loving. She is
very active and loves to talk to you. She seems to
tolerate the other cats in the shelter, however we don't
know how she would do in a home with other cats. We
do know that she isn't a huge fan of dogs. Baskin just
finished raising her litter of 8 kittens, has been spayed,
and would appreciate a forever home she can call her
own..
If you are intrested in meeting Baskin we ask
that you please request an application by sending an
email to animalwelfare@columbiahumane.org. Once
you have an approved applicaiton on file we will then
schedule a time for you to come in and meet the cat or
kitten of your choice. Due to being unable to physical
distance properly in the cattery we are only allowing potential adopters by appointment at this
time. If you have any questions please call or email. Baskin's adoption fee is $125 which includes
all her vaccines, spay, microchip, and flea and worm treatments.

Albus (of the Dumbledore family) is a happy, bright addition
to the CHS clan. With such a magical background, he is
sure to bring many smiles and much laughter to the family
that he chooses. This guy is a relatively recent addition from a shelter
in Texas, where he lived for a time in a foster home. At just over a year
old he is very excited in the shelter and really likes all the attention he
gets. He enjoys playing with his toys and playing with all his dog
friends in playgroup, but we don't think he will do well in a home with
other dogs as he tends to guard. We are not sure what his experience
is with cats. He is about 45 lbs and needs a fenced yard. Albus does
seem to have a hearing issue, has been conditioned to hand signals,
and may not do well in a home with kids. We are looking for someone
with experience with dogs with hearing loss.
We do best-fit for each family, so prior to just showing up at
the shelter please email animalwelfare@columbiahumane.org and we
will send you an application. Once the application is approved we will
then schedule a time for you to come and meet the pet that you are
interested in.
