It has survived the Spanish Flu of 1918, the Depression of 1929, World War II, and the pandemic of 2020. How has it managed to survive all these years? It has offered a respite from work, stress, and depression, invit- ing folks to come out and enjoy na- ture. It all began on July 4, 1920 when 18 members of the Knights of Pythias hiked to the top of Saddle Mountain. At the summit, they read the Declaration of Independence and sang the Star Spangled Ban- ner and other patriotic songs. Columbia Humane Society Featured Dog Baskin is a recent addition to the shelter. This two-year-old little girl is very sweet and loving. She is very active and loves to talk to you. She seems to tolerate the other cats in the shelter, however we don't know how she would do in a home with other cats. We do know that she isn't a huge fan of dogs. Baskin just finished raising her litter of 8 kittens, has been spayed, and would appreciate a forever home she can call her own.. If you are intrested in meeting Baskin we ask that you please request an application by sending an email to animalwelfare@columbiahumane.org. Once you have an approved applicaiton on file we will then schedule a time for you to come in and meet the cat or kitten of your choice. Phone: 503-397-4353 Albus (of the Dumbledore family) is a happy, bright addition to the CHS clan. With such a magical background, he is sure to bring many smiles and much laughter to the family that he chooses. This guy is a relatively recent addition from a shelter in Texas, where he lived for a time in a foster home. At just over a year old he is very excited in the shelter and really likes all the attention he gets. He enjoys playing with his toys and playing with all his dog friends in playgroup, but we don't think he will do well in a home with other dogs as he tends to guard. We are not sure what his experience is with cats. He is about 45 lbs and needs a fenced yard. Albus does seem to have a hearing issue, has been conditioned to hand signals, and may not do well in a home with kids. We are looking for someone with experience with dogs with hearing loss. We do best-fit for each family, so prior to just showing up at the shelter please email animalwelfare@columbiahumane.org and we will send you an application.
