6 in other words february20 2020 On the Shelves By Shannon Romtvedt We are pleased to announce that the children’s books received through a matching grant from The Pilcrow Foundation are now on display and ready for check-out! We have a great mix of board books, picture books, early readers, easy non- fiction, children’s non-fiction, and chapter books. The Vernonia Library was the recipient of a matching grant from The Pilcrow Foundation in the fall of 2019. The Pilcrow Foundation provides “new, quality, hardcover children’s books to rural public libraries.” The grant is a 2:1 match. The Friends of the Vernonia Public Library contributed $400 to the match, and the Library received an additional $800 worth of books from The Pilcrow Foundation. We were surprised to open up our first box of books upon arrival and find more books than expected! 77 books arrived directly through grant funding. We also received two books from Shout Mouse Press and an additional 24 books through a generous donation from Mr. & Mrs. Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman of Colorado. This donation was of math and science books, worth $402.60. Thank you so much to The Pilcrow Foundation, the Friends of the Vernonia Library, Shout Mouse Press, and Mr. & Mrs. Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman. We are looking forward to these books being read by the children and families in our community. If there is a particular book from the grant you enjoy or appreciate having available at our library, please let staff know. We would love to have feedback! Umatilla requested the help in response to the catastrophic damage they experienced as a result of the re- cent flooding there. “We figured they were needing some assistance, so we contacted them to let them know we FOR TOWING EMERGENCIES IN AND AROUND THE VERNONIA AREA Police and County personnel are required to use a rotation of available providers, UNLESS YOU SPECIFICALLY ASK for a service by name. Columbia County experienced something similar in the 1996 floods where other agencies came in to help open roads back up and assist in getting things back to normal. “We felt it was our turn to help someone else,” said Wood. Commissioner Alex Tardif also reached out to his counterpart in Umatilla County, Commissioner George Murdock, expressing Columbia County’s willingness to help. In cases such as these, agencies are able to respond quickly without the need for developing agreements due to already being parties to the Managing Oregon Resources Efficiently Intergov- ernmental Agreement (MORE-IGA). The agreement lays out terms for coop- eration and reimbursement so agencies can react quickly and provide support to each other. Both Columbia County and Umatilla County are parties to the agreement. The Columbia County crew was scheduled to be there for a week, or lon- ger if needed.
