The team will take part in the North Marion Tourna- ment on October 5. Volleyball – The Vernonia Lady Log- gers are off to a good start this season with a 10-2 overall record. They sit in first place in the Northwest League, and are ranked #6 is OSAA 2A after winning the Vernonia Tournament on September 14. Head coach Teresa Williams says her team is starting to play more cohesively and staying positive on the court. Sophomore setter Brooklynn Walters is starting to take a leadership role, and freshman Kortnie Adams has been a pleasant surprise. Offensively Jordan the team is led by senior outside hitter Walters and captain Jordan Walters and sopho- more Nita Cook. Another strong part of the Lady Log- gers game has been their service, which has been an offensive weapon. “We work on serving everyday in practice,” says Williams, “because we know, we have to serve and we have to pass.” Vernonia put in an impressive showing at the Heppner Tournament on September 7, against three perennially strong opponents, beating Weston-McEw- en 3-2, Grant Union 3-1, and host Heppner 3-1. At the Vernonia Tournament the Lady Loggers beat Delphian and Gaston in bracket play to win the tournament. They also have league wins over Faith Bible, Mannahouse Christian, and Neah-Kah-Nie. The Lady Loggers have upcoming home Cross Country – Head coach John Roady’s Loggers are off and run- ning this season, with a large group of boys and a growing girls varsity team. The first meet of the season was at Tualatin High School on September 7, where Vernonia com- Local firefighters and EMS personnel took part in the annual 9/11 Memorial March, silently walking from their headquarters to City Hall and back in honor of those who fell during that fateful day in 2001. Sophomore Sadie Gump placed 21 st in a time of 22:38, followed by junior Jenna Handegard in 30 th place with a time of 24:33 and junior Emma Hahn who placed 51 st in a time of 30:35. The Logger boys placed 8 th out of 18 teams. Senior Kale Sullivan placed 48 th overall with a time of 19:25, followed by freshman Peter Hahn in 52 nd place in a very good time of 19:54.
