In Memory of...
Rose M. Cutright
June 19, 1948 - March 19, 2019
Rose Marie Cutright, 70, a mem-
ber of the Vernonia community, died
Tuesday evening, March 19, 2019 at her
home. Arrangements pending through
Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in
Vernonia.
Leola V. Ruff
Leola V. Ruff, 105, a former res-
ident of the Vernonia and North Plains
communities, late of Canby, Oregon,
died Wednesday evening, March 27,
2019 at her home.
A Celebration of Life Service
was held on Saturday, April 27, 2019
at 1:00 pm at the Bethany Evangelical
Church, 450 S. Ivy Street in Canby, Or-
egon, with Pastor Jeff Jennings and Pas-
tor Dave McElheren officiating. Private
Interment was held at the Vernonia Me-
morial Cemetery, 2080 Bridge Street in
Vernonia.
Family and friends were in-
vited to attend a reception immediately
following the church ceremony, at the
Gathering Place.
Leola Vale Ruff was born No-
vember 8, 1913 in Centralia, Washing-
ton, the daughter of the late Charles P.
Caldwell and Elfa (Murell) Caldwell.
She was raised and received her educa-
tion in Crescent, Oklahoma.
She was united in marriage
to Edwin John Ruff on December 16,
1934 in Dallas, Texas. Following their
marriage in 1941, Mr. Ruff went into
the ministry, having been involved in
Missionary Work having taught flannel
graph in public schools in Lamar Coun-
ty, Texas. They later moved to Weather-
ford, Oklahoma, where they lived until
1950 when they moved to Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Ruff attended the Dallas Bible Insti-
tute, having graduated and received his
certificate in 1954. They then moved to
Portland, Oregon, where he and Leola
pastored the Grace Bible Church from
1954 to 1959. They then moved to the
Vernonia community, where they pas-
tored the Vernonia Bible Church until
1962. They then pastored in Corvallis,
Montana until 1967 when they moved to
Ellensburg, Washington. They pastored
in Ellensburg, until 1970, when they
moved to Stevensville, Montana. They
pastored in Stevensville for eight years,
until 1978 when they retired and returned
to Portland. In 1984, they returned to the
Vernonia community, where she resided
until 1997.
Leola was preceded in death
by her husband, Rev. Edwin J. Ruff, on

May 6, 1988 in Hillsboro, Oregon, after
celebrating over fifty-three years of mar-
riage together.
In 1997, she moved with her
daughter Deanna, to the North Plains
community, where they lived for eight
years. In 2005, they moved to the Canby
community, where they have resided
since. While living in the North Plains
community, Leola was very active at the
Senior Center. Since moving to the Can-
by community, Leola enjoyed attending
activities at Thelma’s Place.
She was also a longtime mem-
ber of the Cedar Mill Bible Church.
Among her special interests, she
enjoyed walking, sewing, and quilting.
Leola also was an accomplished artist,
having enjoyed oil painting of sceneries.
Leola was also preceded in death
by her parents, Charles and Elfa Caldwell;
her two sisters, Velva Decker and Merle
Novinger; her brother Lyle Caldwell; and
her son Edwin John Ruff, Jr.
Survivors include her three
children, (twin) Jerry Ruff of Colville,
Washington, (twin) Joyce Copelin of
Louisville, Kentucky, and Deanna Cal-
laway of Canby, Oregon.
Also surviving are many grand-
children, great-grandchildren, and great-
great-grandchildren, and many nieces
and nephews.
The family suggests that re-
membrances may be contributions to the
Moody Bible Institute, 820 N LaSalle
Blvd, Chicago, IL 60610 or to Bristol
Hospice, 10365 SE Sunnyside Road,
Ste 340, Clackamas, OR 97015, in her
memory.

Col. Robert D. Potts Sr.
Col. Robert D. Potts Sr. was
born on May 6, 1929 in Kelso, Washing-
ton, and passed away at home on April
20, 2019 in Kelso, Washington, two
weeks shy of his 90 th birthday.
Born to ‘Jack’ Newton Potts
and Gladys Victoria Johanson, Rob-
ert’s childhood was spent in Longview,
Washington, Empire, Oregon, Verno-
nia, Oregon, and Portland, Oregon. He
graduated from Milwaukie Union High
School in May of 1947 where he ex-
celled in English, history, and social
science. He studied Political Science at
Vanport College before the flood and fin-
ished his degree at University of Oregon
in 1951.
Robert entered the U.S. Army
in August 1952. He did a tour in Korea
and served 32 years before retiring as a
Colonel. Upon leaving the service, he
worked at the Donald E. Long Juvenile
Detention Center as the Detention Su-
perintendent until 1992.
Robert married his first wife,
Leecreta Dykes on March 20, 1954 and
together had two beautiful sons, Robert
D. Potts Jr. in 1955 and Jefferson Lee
Potts in 1974. Robert and Leecreta were
married for 42 years.
Robert later married Hazel Gon-
ser, his elementary school sweetheart,
on November 1, 1996 and they made
their lives together in Kelso, Washing-
ton.
Robert was a long-time member
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
Day Saints and held multiple leadership
positions within his ward and stake. He
was an active church member up until
his last days, and was well-loved by his
congregation.
Close to passing, Robert said he
“had a belly full of satisfaction” of his
life. He will be remembered as a loyal,
grateful, patriotic, and devoted man.
Robert is survived by his wife
Hazel; ex-wife Leecreta; son Jefferson
Potts (Nancy); grandchildren Robert
Potts, Alexandra Potts, and William
Potts; brothers David Potts, Michael
Potts (Donna); sister Gale Ullerick;
many nieces and nephews; and Hazel’s
family.
Robert was preceded in death by
his son Robert D. Potts Jr.
Graveside services will be held
at Longview Memorial Park (Longview,
Washington) on Friday, May 10, 2019
at 11:00 am. All are welcome. In lieu of
