Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event in Vernonia
Toxic items used in the home
can be brought for safe disposal
The vernal equinox has arrived,
and to help residents with their spring
cleaning, Columbia County is hosting
a household hazardous waste event in
Vernonia on Saturday, April 13. A large
variety of toxic and unsafe materials can
be brought to the free event which takes
place from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at 377
Bridge St. (Spencer Park between State
and Washington Avenues).
Many items used around the
home, including cleaning, gardening,
and automotive products can be harm-
ful to people, fish, and wildlife. Toxins
in these products can present potential
safety and health hazards when poured
down the drain or dumped on the ground.
The event provides residents a safe and
responsible way to discard these and
many other items which are not accepted
with curbside service.
Items must be in containers
of less than five gallons and should be
secured safely during transport. Trained
household hazardous waste technicians
will unload materials from vehicles.

No garbage, trash, items con-
taining asbestos, or liquids in con-
tainers larger than five gallons will
be taken.
Residents can bring latex and
acrylic paint, oil-based paint, enamel,
stains, lacquers, shellacs, varnishes
and primers to Vernonia Hardware
and Supply at 1026 Bridge St. or to
the Columbia County Transfer Sta-
tion in St. Helens during their respec-
tive business hours.
Expired, unused or unwanted
prescription drugs can be deposited
in the MedReturn collection box at
Vernonia City Hall’s main lobby
from 8:00 am - 12:30 pm and 1:30 -
5:00 pm weekdays.
Columbia County sponsors free
household hazardous waste events (for
county residents only) in various loca-
tions throughout the area. The next event
takes place June 1 in Rainier.

and directs recycling, reuse, waste
reduction and household hazardous
waste management throughout its 657
square-mile area. The County operates
a transfer station in St. Helens and
administers the solid waste collection
franchises within the unincorporated
area of the county.
Film Celebrates Wild

(WSC) at the Patagonia store in Portland
for the screening of their new film, Ne-
halem: A Wild Salmon Stronghold, on
April 18, 2019 at 7:00 pm and find out!
The film features Upper Ne-
halem Watershed Council (UNWC)
Executive Director, and Vernonia resi-
dent, Maggie Peyton, as she discusses
habit restoration projects on the Ne-
halem River, including a pilot project
funded by the WSC to install Beaver
Analog Dams on tributaries of the Ne-
