Kiwanis Assist
Vernonia Cares Food Bank
On March 26, 2019 two representatives from the Portland area Kiwanis or-
ganization brought generous food donations to Vernonia Cares Food Bank. Shortly
after the 2007 flood, they began making trips once or twice a year to Vernonia.
The main chairpersons, Oscar Domingo (Montavilla Kiwanis) and Jewell
Bailey (Rockwood Kiwanis) promote the food project through their organization
and also from oth-
er clubs (Damas-
cus and Sandy
chapters). Then,
Oscar and Jewell
bring the food to
Vernonia Cares
Food Bank. Their
recent
delivery
was 289 pounds
of
nutritious
foods like ham,
summer sausage,
cheese, eggs, rice,
canned foods, and
toothpaste. Franz
Bread donated 50
loaves of bread.
These high-pro-
tein,
nutritious
foods are espe-

Taking on a repertoire edited by Maestro John
Rutter, Columbia County’s own masterworks choir,
the River City Singers, is offering a series of concerts
this spring. “Cathedral Reflections” will be performed on Sunday, April 28 at 7:00
pm at the First United Methodist Church, located at 560 Columbia Blvd. St Hel-
ens, and on Saturday, May 4 at 2:00 pm at the Birkenfeld Theatre located within
the Clatskanie Cultural Center, 75 S. Nehalem, Clatskanie.
Suggested donations are $10. Later in May, a group of these choristers will
go on to New York City to join a massed Choir in singing these works at Carnegie
Hall under the direction of Maestro Rutter. The choir thanks the Columbia County
Cultural Coalition for its generous grant, which made the local concerts possible.
